  5. “A Rotten Prank” Arnold loves to play pranks and mean jokes on people. One time, he hid all of his mom’s left shoes so she couldn’t find a pair to match. This made Arnold late for school and his mom late for an important meeting at work. Another time, he threw water balloons at his next-door neighbor as she was walking to her boyfriend’s car to go to a school dance. She got soaked and had to change her clothes.

  6. What inference can you draw from Arnold’s behavior? He likes to give others a hard time. He is not considerate.

  7. What clues did the author give you? He hid all of his mom’s left shoes. Threw water balloons at his neighbor as she was passing by.

  8. Continued “A Rotten Prank” Today, Arnold is trying to talk Lee and Jack into throwing rotten tomatoes at passing cars. Lee and Jack pass, preferring to go rollerblading instead. So Lee and Jack take off for the park, and Arnold decides to have his fun alone.

  11. “A Rotten Prank” On the way home from the park, Lee and Jack passed the place where Arnold was going to throw tomatoes at cars. They couldn’t believe what they saw. There were two police cars with their lights flashing, and Arnold was in the back seat of one of the cars. A black four-door car with a big dent in its fender sat on the side of the road with its lights flashing. The owner of the car was looking furiously back and forth from Arnold to his car.

  12. Make an Inference What inference can you make based on the clues from the text. Arnold threw a tomato and it hit the car. The driver of the car was startled and had an accident. The owner of the car is angry at Arnold. Arnold is going to the police station.
