UAB ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award • The mission of the UAB ADVANCE program is to increase the participation and advancement of women in science, engineering, and social science academic careers. • The UAB Office for the Advancement of Women in Science and Engineering (OAWSE) was created in the Fall 2003 to serve as a resource for women faculty on campus and to run the UAB ADVANCE program. • Our programs are for faculty in the Schools of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM), Engineering, and Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS). • The focus of our work is to increase awareness of the issues involving all women in academia, and to help develop and disseminate best practices to improve retention and recruitment of women faculty at UAB.

UAB ADVANCE Program Elements • Faculty Awards • 3-6 ADVANCE Senior Professorships • 5 ADVANCE Junior Professorships (one per year) • 2 Transition Award (one in years 2,4) • UAB ADVANCE Symposium (2004, 2006, 2008) • To present progress and highlights of the UAB ADVANCE program to the campus community, and to inform the community on the issue of advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers • Visiting Scholars Program • To bring women scientists and engineers to UAB as part of regular seminar series for networking, role models • Faculty Career Development Program • For field-specific training programs • Materials Sciences/Engineering Assistant Professor to attend leadership workshop • Work with Julia Austin, Director, Graduate School Professional Development Program, to develop workshops/seminars
