1. Stem-and-Leaf Plot What is it?
How can you make one?
What does it tell you?
2. What is a stem-and-leaf plot? It’s a type of graph.
It displays every piece of data in a large set of data.
It shows how many pieces of data fall into various intervals.
3. How can you make a stem-and-leaf plot? First you need some data, such as the average temperature (in şF) in January in 22 major U.S. cities:
38, 5, 21, 16, 44, 49, 62, 13, 29, 52, 57,
68, 78, 9, 30, 39, 62, 15, 28, 50, 11, 56
4. You will begin by making an “unordered” stem-and-leaf plot.
An unordered stem-and-leaf plot is like a
first draft. It will help you get organized.
5. Now take a look at the data.
Notice that that the smallest number is 5
and the largest number is 78.
38, 5, 21, 16, 44, 49, 62, 13, 29, 52, 57,
68, 78, 9, 30, 39, 62, 15, 28, 50, 11, 56
6. Decide what should be the “stems”
38, 05, 21, 16, 44, 49, 62, 13, 29, 52, 57,
68, 78, 09, 30, 39, 62, 15, 28, 50, 11, 56
Let the stems be the tens digits from 0 to 7.
7. List the stems List the stems vertically from smallest to largest.

9. Now you are ready to add the “leaves”
The units digit of each number is its leaf.
The lowest temperature, 5, has a stem of 0.
The units digit is 5: 5 is the leaf.
The highest temperature, 78, has a stem of 7.
The units digit is 8: 8 is the leaf.
10. List each leaf on the same line as its corresponding stem. 0

17. You might want to cross out each number as you add each leaf to the stem-and-leaf plot.

42. Recall that a mode is a “measure of central tendency”.
The mode is the value that occurs
most often in a set of data.
Sometimes there are two modes.
Sometimes there is no mode.
