Goal Special education teachers will formulate an assistive technology implementation plan with a student who has writing needs.
Objectives • State the purpose of writing tasks • Understand how the student’s disability affects writing • Determine the reason(s) for the student’s difficulty with writing tasks
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? • Mandated by law • Research shows that students who use technology for writing will have higher paying jobs, will write better and be successful • To help Julie

Why do students struggle with writing? (Source: Mel Levine, All Kinds of Minds) • Graphomotor: • Coordination of small muscles to form letters Signs of writing problems • Hard to form letters • Difficulty manipulating pencil • Grips pencil tightly • Struggles to coordinate small muscles to keep up with flow of ideas.
Why do students struggle with writing? • Attention: • Maintain concentration on work Signs of writing problems: • Distracted or fidgety during writing tasks • Loses place when writing • Appears mentally fatigued or overly tired while writing • Is unable to get started on writing assignments • Doesn’t exert effort if topic is not personally interesting
Why do students struggle with writing? • Language Production • Using words and forming sentences correctly Signs of writing problems: • Difficulty with word sounds or meaning • Cannot easily spell words - spelled the way they are pronounced • Finds oral expression difficult • Struggles with sentence structure and proper word order • Trouble reading back what is written
Why do students struggle with writing? • Higher Order Cognition • Generating ideas and taking steps to plan/revise Signs of writing problems: • Cannot easily generate ideas or elaborate on them in writing • Has difficulty with writing tasks requiring creativity and/or critical thinking • Finds organizing writing tasks difficult
