This lesson focuses on understanding Chicago Manual Style citations and their importance in avoiding plagiarism. Students will also engage in a values board activity to explore their personal values and relate them to their essay. Homework includes completing the values board and working on their "Who Am I" essay.

  2. Chicago Manual Citations Before we get into Chicago Manual specifically, lets talk about citations. What is the purpose a citation? -To avoid plagiarism and to assign proper authority to a statement When is the use of a citation appropriate?

  3. Lets try some examples 1.China is the largest country on Earth NO 2. The Big Mac has 550 calories YES 3. Rifka has to overcome the hatred of Russian soldiers, as well as, typhus and ringworm. (Letters from Rifkaby Karen Hesse) YES 4. Last year, the Cubs won the world series for the first time in 108 years. NO. 5. 33% of all groundballs are hits, compared to 17% of fly balls. YES

  5. Chicago Manual • Citation • Redwood social studies teachers expect students to use the Chicago Manual of Style when citing academic work. I require footnotes. This essay requires 5 cited sources. Easy Bib is a great resource and is free if you use it on campus.
