PROCEDURES FOR MAKING A TRANSPORTATION CONTROL NUMBER (TCN) FROM A UNIT LINE NUMBER (ULN) A TCN is a 17 character data element assigned to control and manage every shipment unit throughout the transportation pipeline. the TCN for each shipment is unique and not duplicated 5 steps of constructing a TCN from a ULN utilizing an EXAMPLE 5 digit ULN: CEAA1. 1. Position 1 is a service code, (A for Army.) EXAMPLE: A. (service codes taken DOD 4500.32-R, Appendix G) 2. Positions 2-8 (7 total positions) are reserved for the ULN (for the 5 digit ULN “CEAA1”, add 2 zeros to fill out the remaining positions.) EXAMPLE: CEAA1 00 3. Positions 9-14 (6 total digits) are reserved for the cargo item’s increment number off the CALM (AALPS) load plan. EXAMPLE: BM0001 4. Position 15 is reserved for a zero EXAMPLE: 0
PROCEDURES FOR MAKING A TRANSPORTATION CONTROL NUMBER (TCN) FROM A UNIT LINE NUMBER (ULN) (continued) 5. Positions 16 &17 are reserved for a split / partial shipment indicator, normally “XX”. If more that one piece of cargo will be moving under this TCN, you can give each piece its own identity by replacing the last “X” with alpha characters “A” through “B”. EXAMPLE: XA, XB, XC, ect…up to XZ THE FINISHED PRODUCT A CEAA100 BM0 001 0XX 1 2 3 4 5
