Optical Transport Networks Digital Hierarchies • T1X1 addresses: • Optical Transport Networks (OTN) • Synchronous Optical Networks (SONET) • SONET standards are in a mature state, efforts this past year focused on incorporation of Virtual Concatenation and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS) for Virtual Concatenated Signals into the existing T1 and ITU-T standards. • A major focus of the work efforts in 2002 was the submission of contributions to Recommendations being developed in ITU-T Study Group 15 GSC-8, OTTAWA

Optical Transport Networks SONET (Synchronous Optical Networks) – T1.105 • Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS) • Supports Virtual Concatenation (T1.105 Addendum approved in 2002) • Payload Mappings; T1.105.02 Addendum on GFP • mapping of GFP signals into payloads (also included in ITU-T SG 15 Recommendations)  • Physical Layer Specifications • T1.105.06 Revisions incorporated short-reach interface requirements (completed in 2002)  GSC-8, OTTAWA

Optical Transport Networks SONET (Synchronous Optical Networks) • Network Element Timing and Synchronization: • T1.105.03 Revision in 2002 describes jitter specifications that are applicable to SONET optical signals (OC-N) and SONET payload signals (i.e., DS1 and DS3). • Automatic Optical Switched Networks (ASON): • 60 contributions in 2002 to the ITU-T work on ASON GSC-8, OTTAWA

Optical Transport Networks SONET (Synchronous Optical Networks) • Technical Reports • Synchronization Network Architecture: • balloted in 2002 (published soon) • provides concepts and techniques for synchronization architectures for use in digital communication networks • Synchronization on Packet Networks: • work began in 2002 • will document synchronization conditions in an environment involving hybrid (packet /TDM) networks GSC-8, OTTAWA
