Pick and Mix Te Tuhi pre-visit lesson 3
Welcome to PickandMix During this lesson we will be exploring… But before we start, let’s recap on what we learnt during our last lesson… • Digital Collage
combines and assembles 3D objects like furniture and present them like a 2D picture. During our last lesson we learnt that 3D Collage … • can be created using glass and layering techniques to give the illusion that they are floating, suspended or have a life of their own. • can be as big as a room and can be interactive like Gregor Kregar’s artwork – Archie.
Let’s start this lesson by exploring “Digital Collage”. Image: http://www.pacegallery.com/artists/327/louise-nevelson
With the advancement of technology in today’s world, artists are now making collage using digital tools and media. Let’s take a look at 4 artists who create collage in the digital world. In the last lesson we saw artists take the art form of collage from 2D to 3D.
Collage and computers Room at the end of the hall 2011 Physical Structures 15, 2011 Physical Structures 13, 2011 NZ artist Jennifer Mason creates digital collages using computer. She can digitally cut, overlay and paste images and print them. Using this technology she creates illusions that appear real. This style of collage is sometimes called photomontage. Collage and computers En Plein Air 2011 Soft signals 2011 Mono No Aware 2011 Rock and roll 2011 Another NZ artist who creates digital collages is Kerry Ann Lee. She uses images from the internet, magazines and old postcards and digitally pieces together her pictures to create fantasy like scenes. Collage and computers Landscape 13 Landscape 16 Miles to go 15 Miles to go 13 Wreckage 3 American artist Matt Wisniekwski creates digital collages in a different way. Matt takes portrait photographs and combines them with images of landscapes and buildings. In his artworks we see how nature and buildings share similar curves, lines and colours as the human body. Collage and video Beneath the radar 2012 Artist Janet Lilo uses technology to create digital collages in a different way. She digitally cuts and overlays images and video to create moving digital collages. Janet uses technology and collage as a way to reflect and share stories of people, places and communities. Collage and video In Pursuit of Venus Hinepūkohurangi 2001 Mahuika 2001 Maui 2007 In her artwork In Pursuit of Venus Lisa Reihana collaged together performance, video and animation to create scenes of Pacific culture and tradition and to share a piece of history about the Pacific with gallery visitors. Māori artist Lisa Reihana has created photographs of Māori gods, goddesses, warriors and ancestors. She has used collage techniques, computer software and other technologies to show their gifts and to share their story. As we have seen, technology has influence how we make collage today… Let’s recap on what we have learnt so far…
What have we learnt so far? Digital Collage • can include using a computer to digitally cut, layer and paste different images together. • can combine digital layering of photos and video to reflect stories of people and different places. • uses different technologies like computers, video and animation software to create moving digital collage.
During our Te Tuhi visit we will think about space, depth and technology. In the art studio we will combine magazine pictures, card and other art materials to create our very own collage.
We look forward to having you all here End of lesson
