Why Use Safety Belts?Because YOU are at risk! • Every time you are in a car, you are at risk of getting into a car crash • Every 5 seconds a crash occurs. • Every 7 seconds a property damage crash occurs. • Every 10 seconds there is a traffic related injury. • Every 12 minutes someone dies in a roadway crash. • Every 4 days an employee dies in a work-related roadway crash. • Most fatal crashes occur within 25 miles of home and at speeds of less than 40 mph. • 1 out of 3 people will be seriously injured in a car crash sometime during their lives. 8. We All Pay for Crashes • When you are involved in a traffic crash: • You pay: Insurance premiums, fines and fees, time off work, rehabilitation, vehicle repair/replacement…. • When others are involved in traffic crashes you pay: • The general public pays nearly ¾ of all crash costs, primarily through insurance premiums, taxes, delays and lost productivity. {NHTSA, Economic Impact, 2002} • The average costs per fatal crash in Ohio is more than $3.4 million. Costs include medical care, lost productivity, property damage and an increased strain on community services.
