Why Use Safety Belts?Because YOU are at risk! • Every time you are in a car, you are at risk of getting into a car crash • Every 5 seconds a crash occurs. • Every 7 seconds a property damage crash occurs. • Every 10 seconds there is a traffic related injury. • Every 12 minutes someone dies in a roadway crash. • Every 4 days an employee dies in a work-related roadway crash. • Most fatal crashes occur within 25 miles of home and at speeds of less than 40 mph. • 1 out of 3 people will be seriously injured in a car crash sometime during their lives. Safe Drivers Need Safety Belts Too • Jumping off a three story building is similar to the force of a crash at 30 mph. • Crashing at speeds as low as 12 mph can kill an unbuckled occupant. • Safety belts reduce the risk of death for those riding in the front seat by about 45%. • Safety belts reduce the risk of death for those driving pickup trucks by 60-65%. We All Pay for Crashes • When you are involved in a traffic crash: • You pay: Insurance premiums, fines and fees, time off work, rehabilitation, vehicle repair/replacement…. • When others are involved in traffic crashes you pay: • The general public pays nearly ¾ of all crash costs, primarily through insurance premiums, taxes, delays and lost productivity. {NHTSA, Economic Impact, 2002} • The average costs per fatal crash in Ohio is more than $3.4 million. Costs include medical care, lost productivity, property damage and an increased strain on community services. Reduce Your Risk.. Buckle Up! • Safety standards that govern lap and shoulder belts require that they withstand up to 6,000 pounds of force without failing. (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) • Safety belts reduce your chances of dying in a crash by 45% and being injured by 50%. • Safety belts also prevent total ejections from the car during a crash. • 75% of car passengers who are totally ejected during a crash are killed.
