MJ2A Ch 2.4 – 2.5 Multiplying & Dividing Integers
Bellwork • Please take out your assignment from yesterday and leave it on your desk for me to check. • Subtract: • 3 – 8 = • 4 – (-6) = • -2200 – (-3500) = • -7 – (-10) =
Assignment Review • Text p. 727 Lesson 2.3 # 1 – 32 (Odd) • This assignment is due at the end of class yesterday….if you were not here please write it down and complete the assignment
Before we begin… • Please take out your notebook and get ready to work…. • So far we have worked with the rules for adding and subtracting integers… • Today we will look at the rules for multiplying and dividing integers….
Objective • Students will multiply and divide integers…
Multiplying & Dividing Integers • The rules for multiplying & dividing integers are easy…because they are the same for multiplying & dividing… • If the signs are the same the answer is POSITIVE • If the signs are different the answer is NEGATIVE • It’s that simple…lets see what it looks like…
Example -5 ∙ 8 = • Since the signs are different the answer must be negative… • When performing these operations evaluate the numbers 1st, then evaluate the signs. • In this case 5 ∙ 8 = 40 • A negative times a positive = a negative • Therefore the answer is -40
Example -9(-7) = • In this case 9 times 7 is 63 • A negative times a negative is a positive • Therefore the answer is +63
Example -77 7 = • In this case 77 7 = 11 • A negative divided by a positive is a negative • Therefore the answer is -11
Example -60 (-6) = • In this case 60 6 = 10 • A negative divided by a negative is a positive • Therefore, the answer is +10
Your Turn • In the notes section of your notebook write and complete the following problems: • 5(-8) = • -4(2)(-6) = • -64 (-8) = • 175 -25
Summary • In the notes section of your notebook summarize the key concepts covered in today’s lesson • Today we discussed multiplying & dividing integers • What is the rule if the signs are the same? • What is the rule if the signs are different?
Assignment • Text p. 727 Lesson 2.4 # 1 – 15 • Text p. 727 Lesson 2.5 # 1 – 15 Reminder • You must write the problem and show how you got your answer. • This assignment is due tomorrow • I do not accept late assignments!
