Key Concept 6.1 – Science and the environment Rapid advances in science altered the understanding of the universe and the natural world and led to the development of new technologies. These changes enabled unprecedented population growth, which altered how humans interacted with the environment and threatened delicate ecological balances at local, regional, and global levels.
Key Concept 6.1.1 I. Researchers made rapid advances in science that spread throughout the world, assisted by the development of new technology.
A. New modes of communication and transportation virtually eliminated the problem of geographic distance.
Scientific paradigms B. New scientific paradigms transformed human understanding of the world. • The theory of relativity • Quantum mechanics • The Big Bang theory • Psychology
Einstein’s Theory of Relativity Einstein’s Theory of Relativity is based on these two premises: 1. The speed of light is constant throughout the universe. Nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. 2. The laws of physics are the same throughout the universe. (These two premises have been proven to be true, time and time again.)

The green revolution C. The Green Revolution produced food for the earth’s growing population as it spread chemically and genetically enhanced forms of agriculture. Green Revolution refers to a series of research, development, and technology transfer initiatives, occurring between the 1940s and the late 1960s, that increased agriculture production worldwide, particularly in the developing world, beginning most markedly in the late 1960s.The initiatives, led by Norman Borlaug, the "Father of the Green Revolution" credited with saving over a billion people from starvation, involved the development of high-yielding varieties of cereal grains, expansion of irrigation infrastructure, modernization of management techniques, distribution of hybridized seeds, synthetic fertilizers, and pesticides to farmers.
Medical innovations D. Medical innovations increased the ability of humans to survive. • The polio vaccine• Antibiotics• The artificial heart
