Description of the Technology Libguides by Springshare • Allow librarians to create subject guides (Redden, 2010) • Distribute library content, resources and services • Provide a one-stop-shopping experience for users catering to their area of learning and allowing web 2.0 technologies into the library that are easy for users to understand. (Springshare, 2010) • The features of LibGuides are to make it easy for librarians to create research pathfinders efficiently, quickly and dynamically for their users to find the most up to date and useful information to do their research (Hamilton, 2010). • The service is affordable based on size of insitution (Springshare, 2010) • Guides are fully customizable and increase resource, service and program usage.
Explanation of Service • The Library 101 Committee will be using LibGuide technology to create a library guide for any SJSU user new to the university library system, or for anyone needing a refresher to San Jose State University King Library. This guide is not particular to any department, major, or concentration, but instead provides a “Library 101” explanation of the various services available to incoming students in all areas. The guide will provide tutorials for such concepts as conducting a database search, creating citations, and paper formatting, as well as links to these resources within the SJSU website or on other sites. This will include: Information about library programs and services available to new students
Explanation of Service (Continued) • Information on how to request an article, book, or other type of material via GetText, ILLiad, or LINK+. • General academic databases such as Academic Search Premier with a broad area of academic focus. • Links to more information on formatting in different styles students might use: MLA, Chicago, APA, etc. • Tutorials on conducting searches, creating citations (e.g. in RefWorks), and evaluating search results. • Contact information for librarians, hours of availability, etc. • Frequently Asked Questions about the library and its services. • The Library 101 LibGuide will eventually be easily accessible through the library’s website, as it will be included on an existing page that lists the library’s numerous other LibGuides.

Assessment • Students will learn from our site how to conduct effective information searches, obtain materials, or request materials if they are not available. Students will also learn how to format papers once they have obtained this information, and will understand who to contact if they are unsure about any step of the process.An assessment of the LibGuide will be done six months after implementation. A survey created in Google Forms will give students access to an online embedded survey on the front tab of the LibGuide. The survey will assess:How helpful they have found the site • What, if anything, they have learned, and • Whether or not they intend to use it again.
Assessment (Continued) They will be encouraged to use this assessment tool at any time, but will receive a particular request to do so after any in-person training sessions. The LibGuides team members will also keep track of how many hits each tab receives on a periodical basis, and if possible who is viewing which page from where. The survey will be created using the Google Forms platform, so results will be collated in a spreadsheet available to all librarians involved in the project.The LibGuide team will be responsible for viewing and analyzing the collected survey responses on a regular basis, and then summarizing the results for the others. All librarians will then convene to discuss outcomes, how they need improvement, and methods best suited to implementing whatever changes are necessary.
