  1. Agricultural Development Service Program in Guatemala Academy for Future International Leaders Class of 2009 Kristin Krenz and Kathleen Karika

  2. Program Description • Developed with the Borlaug Institute and the MSCC L.T. Jordan Institute for sustainability • 10 competitively selected undergraduates • 3 weeks corresponding to Summer Session 1, 2010, $730 per student • Assisting Mayan farmers with various agricultural projects in Chimaltenango, Guatemala

  4. Implementation: Spring 2009 • Contacted Johanna Roman at the Borlaug Institute and secured funding • Partnered with L.T. Jordan Institute to create official ISP • Found marketing students to advertise program • Attended MSCC Development luncheon • Organized Spring 2010 orientation classes with Dr. Marisa Suhm

Implementation: Fall 2009 • Book flights using group rate through Mexicana Airlines from San Antonio • Secure final costs and budget • Advertise and fundraise using resources from marketing group • Interview and select students • Release application September • Application due mid-November • Students notified of selection December • Begin Guatemalan coffee fundraiser – Finals Week

Implementation: Spring & Summer 2010 • Finalize projects to be completed in Guatemala • Orientation classes • Cultural immersion (Dr. Suhm) • Basic agricultural Spanish (Dr. Suhm) • Final planning meeting • Continue Guatemalan coffee fundraiser • LEAVE FOR GUATEMALA! • Participants present to AFIL class of 2010

  7. Problems • Sharing funding with FLI • Fundraising • Establishing contacts and networking • Foreseeable problems: • Generating interest • Securing airfare

  8. Successes • Donation from Borlaug Institute • Support from Diego Garcia, L.T. Jordan, and the MSCC • Insurance, flights, interviewing, fundraising • Help from marketing students • Sustainability through ISP
