  4. ResponsibilityThe student’s response to their ability • Has student data been evaluated to drive instruction? • Has the learner been equipped with effective strategies/tools/resources to foster SDL? • Do I as the facilitator know my audience?

  5. Responsibility (cont’) • Has the learning style(s) of the student been addressed? • Is the classroom climate conducive for SDL? • Do your students, “Understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?”

  6. Ability “Student’s capacity to engage in self-directed learning is viewed as a highly desirable goal of professional education because it is a requisite for continuous learning after graduation” (p.578) -Raidal and Violet (2009).

  7. New Generation of Learners • “It is, at least in large part, up to professors to encourage and develop this skill in their students so that they will be equipped for educational opportunities and challenges beyond their formal education” (p.100). Dynan, Cate and Rhee (2008)

  8. Essential Components • Learner ownership: shift in power from teacher to learner • Critical reflection • Student engagement • Action as a product of critical reflection • Pertinent technology

  9. Minimal requirements of SDL? Opportunity to be: • creative, adaptability, encouraging exploration, student ownership, going beyond the curriculum guide, safe environment, collaboration, application of learning, facilitator as a resource, reflection, ability to prioritize, self-motivate.

  10. ParakletosCalled to one’s side or aid. “Effective teachers are not pontificating heads but walk alongside the learning” (Huie Long).

  11. Conclusion Reflect on: • Your role as an instructor • Instructor/student motivation • Effectiveness of learning objections/goals • Difficulties of self-direction • Student achievement • Appropriate instructional enhancements
