Building Demolition • Do not attempt to violate the law of gravity in demolition projects • Find someone else to tell the owner next door about his car Lesson Learned: Stand way back!
(Asbestos Abatement)2 • Comprehensive Renovations and Abatement in 1986 • Testing at time of demolition found improperly removed asbestos.
(Asbestos Abatement)2 • The culprit was an ineffective removal of asbestos containing acoustical plaster • Cost impact: ~ $300,000 and one month lost from and already aggressive schedule Lesson Learned: Never trust very old data
Parking Lots Require Storm Drains Some drains are deep Some are REAL deep …And we found water
So we pumped Lots and Lots of water
Then we found the sewer • The sewer was previously and incorrectly abandoned • The City’s records showed it as active • Our project contingency was $83K smaller
Fitness Center Pool • “Build it and they will come” • Perhaps not…. at least for now Lesson Learned: Design for BIG kids first
Engineering Building Delphi Clean Room • An exercise in how not to produce a complex outcome • Late and over budget • Researchers are not good planners or builders
