Background • Michael was born in New York on November 21st 1935. • He first shot to fame when he began his career as a camera operator on the iconic Spielberg film, Jaws. • He later went on to combine with Scorsese on two of his films, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. • He has shot more than 40 feature films and thrived during the American New Wave of the 1970’s.
Cinematic Style • Chapman is renowned for his use of sharp and strong colours throughout all of his films. • However I believe some of his best work came when he was director of photography on the film Raging Bull where he showed his versatility behind a lens by adapting to the set and for periods of time strapping cameras to the actors themselves.
Why does he inspire me? • As a particular fan of black and white movies myself I particularly liked the way Chapman produced the images on Raging Bull and after watching the film I looked further into his work and found it was a recurring theme, with his strong sharp and out of the ordinary images.
Why does he inspire me? • As a person Chapman has also inspired me, he described his route into cinema as ‘an accident’ and his down to earth attitude and approach to cinema is something to be admired. What makes film art? - Michael Chapman
How can I base my identity on his? • To base my own identity on Chapman’s itself would be impossible. To define his own style is hard enough as he varies from strong bold colours to soft black and white, he matches imagery and colours with the emotions that aren’t necessarily on screen which only works with certain films. • The only thing I can focus on is making sure that before I shoot the colours are pivotal and that they are making a statement as well as the images itself.
