  2. Remember? • The subjunctive is a MOOD • We use the subjunctive after: • Impersonal expressions (esbuenoque) • Verbs of emotion (estoycontentoque) • Verbs of doubt (no estoyseguroque)

  3. Formation of Present subjunctive • We take the “yo” form of the verb in the present tense • We drop the “o” • Then we add the OPPOSITE endings

  4. Verbs of influence • Aconsejarque • Dejarque • Exigirque • Mandarque • Prohibirque • Sugerir (e-i) que • To advise that • To allow that • To demand that • To order/command that • To prohibit that • To suggest that

  5. Formation of past subjunctive • Put the “verb of influence” in the PRETERITE • “-ar” verb endings “-er/-ir” verb endings

  6. ¡OJO! • Remember-These verbs of influence are in the preterite, but they are not subjunctive. They are indicative (aka) regular preterite tense. • The subjunctive ALWAYS comes after “QUE”

  7. Formation of the past Subjunctive • Take the verb that follows “que” and put it in the ellos/ellas form of the preterite: • i.e. • Hablaron • Comieron • Vivieron

  8. Formation of the past subjunctive • Get Rid of “-Ron”

  13. Ejemplo • El trabajador social aconsejóqueyoayudara a mi padre. preterite imperfect subjunctive • The social worker advised that I help my dad.

  14. Ejemplo • Nuestraprofesoraprohibióqueusáramos los móviles. preterite imperfect subjunctive • Our teacher prohibited that we use our cell phones.

  15. ¡Ojo! • The nosotros form will have an accent over the vowel before the “r” • Habláramos • Comiéramos • Viviéramos
