  2. Sustained Content • Content is sustained • No shift from one unrelated theme to another • Single content focus for the entire term • Accumulate knowledge from several sources • Integrates skills – in our example S, L, and R all support the W

  3. 5-Level Intensive English Program • Beginner, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4 • 16 hours a week • 16 weeks per semester • A majority of students are provisionally admitted MSU students (academic track)

  4. Level 4 Writing Content • meets for 2 hours 4 times a week • covers writing, grammar, and a sustained content theme in the form of a full-length book or a collection of articles • Students will produce 3 multidraft essays over the course of 16 weeks

  5. Our Content Choices • Parenting – The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother • Social Issues – The Blind Side

  6. Michael Oher – homeless boy – ends up getting allowed to attend a private high school in Memphis • Tuohy Family – takes Michael in and eventually ends up adopting him • Michael is becomes a great football player • Drafted into NFL

  7. By Amy Chua, Harvard-educated Yale law school professor • Strict “Chinese Parenting” vs. Western Parenting • Straight As and rigorous music training schedule • Main conflict is between Amy & her daughter Lulu • Lulu rebels against Amy’s strict parenting

  8. Criteria for Choosing Book • Contemporary • Relatable themes • Recognizable themes • Controversy: different viewpoints • Language • Length • Strong Character Development • Emotional engagement

  9. Planning • Decide on content strain and text • Order the books ASAP • Create pre-reading context and scaffolding assignments (helps with citation later) • Choose the essay questions

  10. Essay Questions The Blind Side: What kinds of motivation do people have for helping others or doing good deeds? Use examples from The Blind Sideand other class readings to support your answer. Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother: How do you feel about Amy’s parenting methods and philosophy? What is the best way for parents to guide their children to become successful adults?
