  2. The Radical Christ Introduction • During the 1930’s, Britain was led by two men who were greatly responsible for the rise of Adolf Hitler. • Sidney Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain were convinced that if only they could appease Hitler they could avoid another world war.

  3. The Radical Christ • That emphasizes something I find fascinating about history. • It is easy to say what people in the past should have done from the vantage point of the present. • We do much the same thing with the history of the Gospels.

  4. The Radical Christ • The Disciples Didn’t Understand the Death of Jesus. • Chapter 9 again introduces the misunderstanding of the disciples and the teaching on discipleship. • Jesus had spoken about the cross before.

  5. The Radical Christ • The disciples don’t understand about the cross. • They don’t understand the attitude that lies behind the cross. • No wonder they didn’t understand the cross.

  6. The Radical Christ • It Looks as if the Disciples Didn’t Understand the Purpose of Jesus’ Life. • 1Whoever is first will be last, and the last first. (Mark 10:1).

  7. The Radical Christ • Servant leadership (9:33-37). • Jesus’ point about discipleship is that disciples must be slaves.

  8. The Radical Christ • Kingdom vision (9:38-41). • 38“Teacher,” said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.” (Mark 9:38, NIV)

  9. The Radical Christ • They were suffering from exclusivism. • Disciples must have a kingdom perspective. • 40for whoever is not against us is for us. (Mark 9:40-41)

  10. The Radical Christ • Pure life (9:42-50). • 43If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.

  11. The Radical Christ • 45And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. (Mark 9:43, 45, NIV) • Sin has terrible consequences. • Disciples must take sin seriously.

  12. The Radical Christ • Obedience to God (10:1-12). • This is an example of religious people doing what they pleased. • Disciples must be obedient to God.

  13. The Radical Christ • No respecter of persons (10:13-16). 14When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. (Mark 10:14, NIV) • Here Jesus rebukes his disciples. • Disciples must associate with the lowly.

  14. The Radical Christ • Sacrificial commitment (10:17-31). • This rich young man had many fine qualities. • There was something he wouldn’t sacrifice in order to follow Jesus. • Disciples must sacrifice everything to follow Jesus. Conclusion
