Robust Five • Trait psychologists have shown that five traits appear repeatedly in research studies • Each big-five trait (or dimension) is a continuum • Advantages to trait theories: • By identifying a persons traits, behaviors can be predicted • Disadvantages to trait theories: • Trait theorists can’t explain or predict behaviors across different situations • Quiet in class but wild at a party
Openness to Experience • Describes people who are open-minded and willing to try intellectual experiences, new ideas, or creative experiences
Conscientiousness • Identifies individuals who are dutiful, dedicated to completing tasks, organized, and responsible
Extraversion • Associated with warmth, talkativeness, and being energetic • The opposite of this dimension is introversion, meaning being quiet or reserved
Agreeableness • Involves being sympathetic to others, kind, and trusting • The opposite is cruel and non-trusting
Emotional Stability (Neuroticism) • Identifies individuals who experience things relatively easily and without getting upset • Opposite – a tendency to experience unpleasant emotions a great deal of the time
