AltaVista • Has categories which you can search in • Has several different navigation bars to use • Has an advanced search feature (buried) • Handy features: • search specifically for images, MP3/audio, andvideos (not always featured on front page) • Babel Fish for translations (10 languages)
Google • Less cluttered home page • Advanced search more obvious • Search groups still, but a layer in • Image search (425 million images) • has specific help and advanced search
AllTheWeb • Again a nice, clean layout • Buttons on top to search specifically for pictures, video, audio • Easy access to customize your retrieval • highlight search terms • open results in new window • number of search results per page
Yahoo • Really busy page, this is just the top part • From Company Overview - “The Only Place Anyone Needs To Go Find Anything, Communicate With Anyone, Or Buy Anything” • From main page links you to access info for various media (PDA, Web-enabled phone, voice)
Common Search Tips + in front of a word means results must include the word (AND) - in front of a word means results should not include the word (ANDNOT or NOT) “ ” used around words indicates search as a phrase * truncation or wild card symbol ( ) used for nesting Arrange terms from left to right
