Why You may need it • Veterans have 10yrs to use the GI Bill • GI Bill eligible Vets from 1985-1994 • Only 52,000 of 641,000 eligible veterans (8%) used all of their GI Bill tuition benefits, • 41% have not used any portion of their GI Bill • Funding $$ into MGIB- In Millions • FY2005-$1627; Unused- $650M • FY2006-$1982; Unused- $792M • FY2007-$2041; Unused- $816M (estimate)

The Bureaucracy of registration/admissions • Usually 8-14 wks for VA to get benefits to you • IF all the paperwork is filled out correctly • Colleges Dis-Enroll you if money not received in time • You receive their benefits only when attending college • Change Majors/Transfer Students-major problems • Our CSU veteran Rep is on campus every day • Roland Rollinger knows the ‘system’ • And… you can contact him! • You will NOT be dis-enrolled at CSU just because your benefits are late! • J. Transition to civilian life • Military to civilian to student • May be challenging to relate to other freshmen • Experienced more stressful events than other students • Camaraderie of the ‘unit’ not there • Been trained to work together to survive • Education is personal • Less teamwork found in classroom

  6. The Education Part • Created classes just for You • ‘Vets only’ for many 1st year courses • Gen Ed Classes for the first two semesters • Adjust subject matter to keep your interest • Evening classes allow for part-time job • Re-Create your “Unit” atmosphere

Classes 1st semester- 14 credit hrs • Intro to Biology- 3 credit hrs • Tuesday & Thursday-evenings 4-5:15pm • Intro to Chemistry- 3 credit hrs • Monday & Wednesday evenings 6-7:15pm • Intro to Math- 4 credit hrs • Tuesday & Thursday 6-7:50pm? • History-4 credit hrs • Monday & Wednesday-4-5:50pm?

The ‘Can you Afford to live and go to school?’Part • Job Opportunities • Internships- Part-time employment • Evening classes allow for daytime employment • They will understand the need for education • Will Work around your schedule • Want to hire vets-Cannot find them helps bring you & the employer together

Why they want to hire You vs other 20 something's • You chose to • Show Your Dedication • You put your life on the line for US • Become Goal oriented • You were given missions & accomplished them • Have the Team be 1st- individual 2nd • Military stresses Teamwork for survival • Characteristics employers want !

Other career paths with • Encourage Small Business ownership • Small Business Administration Goal • 3% of all SBA loans go to veterans • Small Business Administration Reality • Only 0.8% of all SBA loans go to veterans • to work with area businesses • Encourage expansion via veteran ownership

The ‘Veteran Services’ part • helps with other veteran concerns • Benefits- What are you entitled to? • Home loans, Small Business loans/grants • Need to know how to get them • The Gov't is NOT going to help that much • Creating an on-campus SERVice station • Staffed by Professional Veteran Service Organizations • AMVETS, VA, Voc-Rehab- People with connections & impact • They know • how to file, when to file, and who to file a claim for/against

The ‘Power thru Unity’ Part • The success of the ‘Greatest Generation’ • 51% of all College students in 1946 were veterans • They had that camaraderie right away • Got their education and influenced US Policy • Became scientists, judges, congressmen, Media giants • Their Success was a group success • SERV to have GI Bill graduates on campus • Tutoring, Mentoring, and encouragement • Encouraging your GI Bill Success story
