WH- QUESTIONFORMATION In general, wh- questions are formed as follows: ‘Verb to do’ Wh + do/did/does + subject + verb e.g. Where do you work? Wh + is/am/are/was/were + subject e.g. Who is Mary? Wh + is/am/are/was/were + subject+verb(+ing) e.g. What were you doing at 10:00 last night?
WHAT? WHAT is used to refer to objects or ideas in an open question; WHAT demands a NAMING response e.g. What do you want? I want to eat. What is your name? My name isVivien.
WHERE? WHERE demands a LOCATION response e.g. Where is your mum? She is in the concert. Where do you live? I live in Taipo.
WHEN? WHENdemands a time/date response e.g. When did you wake up this morning? I woke up at six o’clock this morning. When is your date of birth? My date of birth ison the 1st of January, 1900
WHY? WHY is thought of as demanding a "cause effect" response and ‘because’ occurs e.g. Why are you crying? I am crying because I failed my test. Why did you stay up all night? I stayed up all night because I had to finish my homework.
WHICH? WHICH is frequently used when there are choices available. e.g. Which colour do you like? I likeblack. Which football match are you watching? I am watchingChelsea vs. Arsenal.
WHO? WHO demands a NAMING response OF A PERSON e.g. Who is the guy drinking at the corner? The guy who is drinking (Relative clause)at the corner/ He is Sam. Who are you? I amGarfield.
HOW? Howdemands an explanation response, such as in How to..., How much..., How many..., etc. e.g. How many oranges do you have? I havethree oranges. How much is your hat? My hat coststhree hundred dollars.
