First Church of Christ Matthew 6:33
Putting the Lord’s Church First • Many things compete for our time and attention today: family, work, the world, etc. • We are told by God to make a choice, set our priorities (Mt. 6:33) • Jesus (Ac. 20:28) and Paul (Col. 1:24) put the church first … what about you? • Let’s talk about the “First Church of Christ”
The Lord’s Church Is First By putting the worship assembly before all others (Mt. 10:34; Ac. 11:26; 1 Cor. 14:23) • I will come worship instead of outdoor activities (1 Tim. 4:8), guests (Acts 10), or work (Phil. 2:12) • I will come worship even if I am not feeling my best (Psa. 122:1) • I will come worship when other things come up in my schedule (Lk. 10:41-42)
The Lord’s Church Is First By putting the Lord before myself (Eph. 1:22; 5:23-24; Col. 1:18) • I will let the Lord lead not self (3 Jn. 6,9-11) • I will serve others in the church not myself (1 Cor. 11:22; Rom. 12:10; 16:1; Phil. 2:4) • I will not seek to be “the greatest” (Mk. 9:34) • I will not be a part of the “Me Generation”
The Lord’s Church Is First By having care and concern for the Lord’s church (2 Cor. 11:28) • I will care about its work and growth (1 Cor. 15:58; 2 Cor. 8:1,5) • I will care about its spiritual and physical needs (Acts 2,4,6) • I will care about its purity (1 Cor. 5:1-13) • I will care about its leadership (Ac. 14:23; 1 Tim. 5:3) • I will care about its message (1 Tim. 3:15)
The Lord’s Church Is First By committing myself as a faithful spouse and not as a casual “date” (2 Cor. 11:3; Eph. 5:32; Rev. 19:7-8; 21:2,9) • I will not seek a church relationship that has no commitment, conditions or involvement • I will not ask, “What can the church do for me?” • I will not be short on allegiance and long on criticism
The Lord’s Church Is First By becoming a member of the Lord’s church (Acts 2:47) • I will be baptized into the body of Christ according to the Bible plan (1 Cor. 12:13; Gal. 3:27; Eph. 4:5) • I will be an active member and not merely a spectator (Rom. 12:4-5; 1 Cor. 12:12-27)
Putting the Lord’s Church First • You can have a local “church of Christ” that is not first in the lives of its members (Rev. 2-3) • Let us examine ourselves and do some soul-searching (2 Cor. 13:5): Are we really putting the Lord’s church first?
