  3. Big question journal • In the face of an unusual obstacle, a true hero would show attributes such as ___________ and ___________. (Explain your reasoning.)

  4. Vocabulary 1 Around the world, people have long enjoyed versions of the Cinderella story. In most versions, the story revolves around a young girl whose mother dies. With the best intentions, her father remarries, hoping the new wife will help him care for his child. However, the evil stepmother and one or two stepsisters treat the heroine cruelly. She is forced to do the most menial tasks. Yet, the heroine keeps her composure, going about her work dutifully and showing her natural goodness. In many versions, the king makes a decree that all the young women of the kingdom should come to a celebration, where the heroine’s life will change.

  5. Vocabulary 1 In the oldest version of the story, which comes from China, Yeh-Shen is the Cinderella character. Yeh-Shen’s mother and father both die, and she is left in the care of her stepmother, who hates her. During her trials, a fish befriends her, but Yeh-Shen’s stepmother kills the fish. When she realizes this, Yeh-Shen feels great indignation. An old man instructs Yeh-Shen to bury the fish’s bones and to go to the burial spot when she needs help. When a festival takes place in town, Yeh-Shen goes to the burial spot and requests a beautiful dress. She receives the dress and golden shoes. As in “Ashputtle,” she loses a shoe, and the king comes looking for the person whom it fits. When Yeh-Shen attempts to try on the shoe, she is jeered by others. Yet, when she puts it on, she is transformed. The king and Yeh-Shen marry and live in perpetual happiness.

  6. Vocabulary 1 • composure [kuhm POH zhuhr] n. self-control; calmness • decree [di KREE] n. official order or decision • hazel [HAY zuhl] adj. light brown; of a certain kind of tree with light-brown nuts • indignation [in dig NAY shuhn] n. anger at perceived injustice • intentions [in TEN shuhnz] n. plans • jeered [JEERD] v. spoke mockingly; made fun • perpetual [per PECH oouhl] adj. continuing forever or for a long time • stepmother [STEP muther] n. your father’s wife if she is not your mother

  7. Vocabulary 2 In many folk tales, heroines are put through difficult tests. The heroine shows her worthiness by passing the test, which often leaves the person who has given the heroine the task feeling frustrated and infuriated. In many stories, a young girl is left in the care of an unloving stepmother. The stepmother often has a haughty, arrogant daughter who treats the young girl badly. The young girl wants a favor—perhaps, as in “Ashputtle”, to join in festivities at a royal ball. The stepmother promises that she will grant the favor if the girl can separate lentils from ashes or, in some stories, good seeds from bad. The girl completes the task with help from the forces of nature. The stepmother views the results with some consternation and dismay.

  8. Vocabulary 2 In “Pepelyouga”, a radiant young girl named Marrais blessed with health and good looks. She and her friends work at their spinning on a high mountain. A man warns them that if one of them should drop her spindle over the precipice, her mother will turn into a cow. Sure enough, Marradrops her spindle as she peers over the cliff, and her mother is transformed. Soon, her father remarries. Marra’sstepmother gives her hemp and tells her that she must spin a shirt by that very evening or she will be killed. Marra must endeavor to complete the task, but she is distraught as she realizes how long the job will take. Marra’s mother (the cow) chews the hemp and it comes out of her ear as thread. Marra is able to make the shirt, and her stepmother is amazed.

  9. Vocabulary 2 In many tales, the heroine survives being cast out into the forest by receiving help from benevolent creatures. Some might view her success as mere luck, but the heroine knows better, and she is eternally grateful for the fantastic, stupendoushelp she receives.
