  1. CH. 9 SEC 1 VIRUSES

  2. GOAL/PURPOSE • STUDENTS LEARNED THAT CELLS ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF LIFE. • NOW YOU WILL LEARN WHY VIRUSES ARE NOT CONSIDERED TO BE LIVING BUT SHARE SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING ORGANISMS

  3. CHOOSE 4 WORDS TO DEFINE

  4. Is a virus living?

  5. WHAT IS A VIRUS? • VIRUS- IS A TINY, NONLIVING PARTICLE THAT INVADES AND MULTIPLIES INSIDE A LIVING CELL. • KEY- THEY DO NOT HAVE CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING ORGANISMS • KEY- THE ONLY WAY IN WHICH VIRUSES ARE LIKE LIVING ORGANISMS IS THAT THEY CAN MULTIPLY

  6. KEY- VIRUSES ARE EVERYWHERE

  7. KEY- VIRUSES ARE SMALLER THAN CELLS

  8. Viruses attacking a cell!

  9. CONT’D • KEY – NO ORGANISM IS SAFE FROM VIRUSES • KEY- VIRUSES NEED A “HOST” ORGANISM TO MULTIPLY • HOST- IS A LIVING THING THAT PROVIDES A SOURCE OF ENERGY FOR A VIRUS OR AN ORGANISM.

  10. CONT’D • KEY- ALL VIRUSES DESTROY THE HOST CELL • KEY- VIRUSES ACT LIKE “PARASITES” • What are PARASITES? • A- ORGANISMS THAT LIVE ON OR IN A HOST AND CAUSE IT HARM

  11. KEY- VIRUSES COME IN ALL SHAPES copy to notes

  12. VIRUS

  13. STRUCTURE OF A VIRUS • KEY- VIRUSES ARE SMALLER THAN CELLS • KEY- SOME VIRUSES ATTACK BACTERIA THEY ARE CALLED “BACTERIOPHAGE” MEANS BACTERIA EATER • KEY- ALL VIRUSES HAVE TWO BASIC PARTS: A PROTEIN COAT THAT PROTECTS THE VIRUS AND AN INNER CORE MADE OF GENETIC MATERIAL • SKETCH AND LABEL FIGURE 2 AT THE BOTTOM PAGE 319.

  14. Copy and label the shapes of viruses.

  15. CONT’D • KEY-EACH VIRUS CONTAINS UNIQUE SURFACE PROTEINS • KEY- SHAPE OF THE SURFACE PROTEINS ALLOW THE VIRUS ONLY TO ATTACH ONLY TO CERTAIN CELLS. THINK “KEYS AND LOCKS” • EXAMPLE- MOST COLD VIRUSES INFECT CELLS ONLY IN THE NOSE AND THROAT OF HUMANS

  16. HOW VIRUSES MULTIPLY • KEY- A VIRUS ATTACHES ITSELF TO A HOST CELL • KEY- THE VIRUS INJECTS ITS GENETIC MATERIAL INTO THE HOST CELL • KEY- ONCE INSIDE THE CELL, A VIRUS'S GENETIC MATERIAL TAKES OVER THE CELLS FUNCTIONS

  17. HOW VIRUSES MULTIPLY • KEY- THE VIRUS INSTRUCTS THE CELL TO PRODUCE THE VIRUS’S PROTEINS AND GENETIC MATERIAL. • KEY- THESE PROTEINS AND GENETIC MATERIAL THEN ASSEMBLE INTO NEW VIRUSES • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfc46NpJ4Y8 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rpj0emEGShQ

  18. ACTIVE VS HIDDEN VIRUSES • KEY- ACTIVE VIRUSESIMMEDIATELY GO INTO A CELL AND START WORKING TO PRODUCE MORE OF THE VIRUS • KEY- HIDDEN VIRUSESDO NOT IMMEDIATELY BECOME ACTIVE. THE VIRUS DOES NOT APPEAR TO AFFECT THE CELLS FUNCTIONS UNTIL THE RIGHT CONDITIONS MAKE IT ACTIVE. SOME CAN STAY HIDDEN FOR YEARS!

  19. VIRUS AND DISEASE • VIRUS – CAN BE A Cold OR FLU BUT USUALLY YOU ARE SICK FOR A SHORT TIME THEN RECOVER • KEY- THEY CAN BE SPREAD THROUGH OBJECTS, ANIMALS, SNEEZES AND COUGHS, AND BODILY FLUIDS • KEY- THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO CURES FOR VIRUSES SOME MEDICATIONS WILL RELIEVE SOME SYMPTOMS

  20. RESEARCH 3 VIRUSES WRITE NAME AND WHAT THE DO? • 1. • 2. • 3. • IS THERE A ZOMBIE VIRUS?

  21. TWD?

  22. WHAT TO DO…… • KEY- RESTING, DRINKING PLENTY OF FLUIDS, AND EATING A WELL-BALANCED MEALS MAY BE ALL YOU CAN DO WHILE TRYING TO RECOVER FROM A VIRAL DISEASE

  23. WHAT TO DO…. • KEY- YOU CAN ALSO PROTECT YOURSELF BY WASHING YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER, RUNNING THE MILE, AND NOT SHARING EATING OR DRINKING UTENSILS. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_yR-oGNMaA

  24. COMPLETE Q AND A P.323 • 1-ABC • 2-AB • 3-A • 4-AB
