Transformations… Translations, Rotations, and Reflections Modified by: Erica Warner Modified from: Powerpoint Posted by TexTeacher #1033http://www.proteacher.org/c/314_Flips_Slides_and_Turns.html
Transformations… • When 2 figures have the SAME SHAPE & SAME SIZE, they are CONGRUENT! congruent not congruent • Only CONGRUENT shapes can beTransformed!!!
Transformations… • The word transform means "to change.” • In geometry, a transformation changes the position of a shape on a coordinate plane. A shape is moving from one place to another. • There are three basic transformations: • Reflection (flip) -Translation (slide) • Rotation (turn) *taken from http://www.misterteacher.com/abc.html
Reflection (flip) • A FLIP takes place when a shape is flipped across a line and faces the opposite direction. Because the shape ends up facing the opposite direction, it appears to be reflected, as in a mirror. Hence the name REFLECTION. • More definitions and examples @: http://www.misterteacher.com/abc.html

Now it is your turn! “Lizzy the Lizard” Transformation Dance Transformations…
Translation (slide) Slide 1 foot in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal direction and then move the other foot to join it. Reflection (flip) 180° jump to move in the opposite direction. Rotation (turn) Keep 1 foot in place and rotate 90°, then 180°, etc. (Pivot…like in basketball) The teacher (or a student) will call out transformations in random order while students ‘dance’! Let’s have some fun! Transformation Dance Motions
