INTRODUCTION Owing to their special properties and advantages, soft gelatin capsules are used in wide variety of industries, but they are used most widely in the farmaceutical industry. Billions of it les are made each year in various sizes and shapes ,and in variety of colors and color combinations. Their pharmaceutical applications are:
As an oral dosage form of ethical or proprietary products for human or vaterinary use. As a suppository dosages form for retaluse,or for vaginal use. Rectal dosages forms are becoming more acceptable for pediatric and geriatric use. Vaginal use is confined to applications that require the medication to be inserted at bedtime. Because of the action of the sphincter muscles, rectal use is not similarly limited.(L.Lachman et al;1986)
MATERIALS & METHODS CAPSULES MATERIALS: capsules are made principally of gelatin blends & may contain small amounts of certified dyes, opaquingagents, plasticizers & preservatives. Capsules have been made with methylcellulose, polyvinyl alcohols, and denatured gelatins to modify their solubility or produced an enteric effect. They are formed by dipping cool stainless steel old pins into agelatin solution. Other methods, such as centrifugal casting, have been used. But the pin method is the only one used in large -scale commercial production.
METHOD OF PRODUCTION: the three major suppliers of empty gelatin capsules are Eli Lilly and company indianapolis IN, capsugel, greenwood,sc,and the R.P. scherercorporation, troy,ml. several smaller volume suppliers exist throughout the world, some of which process for their own use only. the completely automatic machine most commonly used for capsules production consists of mechanisms for automatically dipping, spanning, drying, stripping, trimming, and joining the capsules. The stainless steel pin mold, on which capsules is formed, controls some of the final critical dimensions of the capsules, and tolerance must be held within fraction of a thousandth.

CONCLUSION A capsule can also be faster than a tablet in dispersing and releasing it’s contents ,gelatin breaks down quickly compared to the highly compressed bulking agents used in most pills (and quick releasing bulking agents for tablets are comparatively expensive compared to the usual agents) which can be an advantage for some medications, particularly analgesics. Syrup is essentially sugar dissolved in water, with or without flavours.candy making relies almost exclusively on the special qualities of hot sugar syrups. Capsules can’t be filled quickly and conveniently therefore the physician can change the dose and combination of drugs to suit the individual patient, this is an advantage over tablets.
In addition to having the advantages of elegance, ease of use, and portability, capsules have become a popular dosage form because they provide a smooth, slippery, easilyswallowed, and tasteless shell for drugs, the last advantage is particularly beneficial for drugs having an unpleasant taste or odor. They are economically produced in large quantities and in a wide range of colors and little pressure are required to compact the material,as is necessary in tab letting.
