University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing, 2. Wisconsin Department of Health Services Methods Discussion Introduction The Wisconsin PHSSR Inventory has identified current PHSSR projects and researchers who may become engaged in the PBRN network. A gap exists between types of research underway and types of research questions of concern to LHDs. Next Steps: • Use list of identified researchers to conduct outreach about WPHPBRN and research interests of network participants • Format the inventory for easier use by WPHPBRN partners • Place the inventory on the WPHPBRN Portal • Plan for annual update and maintenance • Monitor inventory for change in number and type of projects over time • Created process for reviewing online databases and conducted reviews of databases: • Center for Urban Population Health • Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program • Marquette University • Medical College of Wisconsin • UW-Madison Discovery Portal • UW-Madison Institute for Clinical and Translation Research • UW-Milwaukee • UW Population Health Institute • Wisconsin Partnership Program • Contacted WI DPH Regional Health Officers • Review of results by 4 steering committee members The Wisconsin PHSSR Inventory is an electronic database of public health services and systems research (PHSSR) projects conducted by Wisconsin-based researchers since 2005. The definition of PHSSR used for the inventory is: “A field of study that examines the organization, financing, and delivery of public health services within communities, and the impact of these services on public health.” (Mays et al., 2009) The inventory was created with four main goals in mind: • Assess baseline status of PHSSR in Wisconsin to allow for trends to be tracked over time • Identify PHSSR research conducted in Wisconsin or by Wisconsin-based researchers since 2005 • Identify researchers who may be interested in working with the PBRN • Assess gaps between LHD research interests and current PHSSR research The steps conducted to create the Wisconsin PHSSR Inventory were: • Created initial inclusion and exclusion criteria to use to uniformly judge projects Inclusion criteria included: • Met Mays et al., 2009 definition of PHSSR • Focused in at least one of the seven PHSSR areas • Conducted since 2005 • Conducted in WI or by a WI-based researcher Exclusion criteria included: • Laboratory-based • Clinic-based/treatment-oriented • Focused outside of the US • Not primarily research • Epidemiology studies of disease etiology only • The inventory was created using Microsoft Excel and included: • Project summary and funding source • Researcher name, credentials, organization, and contact information • Keywords for researcher interest Acknowledgements Results The Wisconsin Public Health Practice-Based Research Network is a grantee of Public Health Practice-Based Research Networks-a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
