DOES CASSIOBURY PARK MEET THE NEEDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE? By Shivam, Seb, Nathan, Dan and Luke
Agenda • Purpose of enquiry • Evidence • Solutions proposed • Conclusion
PURPOSE OF ENQUIRY • To find out if Cassiobury park meets the needs of young people. • Map where the facilities of the park are • Analyse facilities by taking pictures • Carry out a fieldwork plan • Carry out a survey • Make graphs from the survey • Map where new facilities could be located
Evidence • Facility analysis • Fieldwork • Survey
Facility Analysis Paddling pools with a children playground beside and a refreshments stall beside Tennis courts and a basketball court within Two cricket nets Café Cha Cha Cha and a children playground area Canal Main entrance with a walking path (and section for cycling) which can lead to café and tennis courts Key: P : parking - - - - - - - - : walking, cycling and running routes Bowling green Football pitches
FACILITY ANALYSIS Tennis courts: There are two concrete tennis courts. However two courts isn’t sufficient for people in the summer as it becomes popular and use of the grass courts behind is low due to bad quality. For example the ball doesn’t bounce well. The quality of the concrete courts, on the other hand, is good as there are clear markings and a good strong net. There is a small basketball court located badly (beside the tennis courts). Café Cha Cha Cha: The café has got an area of benches to sit and eat and children's playground beside. This convenient as parents can talk, eat and supervise children. The Café is fairly large and well structured and the benches are clean without any satins. The children playground has many facilities and is surrounded by a fence.
Football pitches: The football pitches are spread along the field and go as far as the car park. All the pitches are the same size and have open goals of the same size. The quality of the pitches is quite good as there are markings and the grass is quite short. The pitch is not very muddy and is in an area which is away from other facilities. Cricket pitches: There are two cricket pitches. The quality is mediocre as the ground on the cricket pitches is rough and there are no markings. The location is very bad as it is beside a bush and the people are restricted. In addition there are no holes to allow stumps to be put.
Paddling pools: The paddling pools are fairly large and well designed to be attractive for children. They are also equipped with fountains for children. There are benches around to sit and even for parents who can talk and supervise. There are changing rooms (which are however small) and a small tall for refreshments in the summer. Children playground: This children playground is beside the paddling pool and children can easily play after swimming (a good location). Parents can come in and supervise as it is fairly large. The quality of the slides inside are good and there is a large variety of activities to do inside.
Canal and boating: The canal is a good facility where people can boat and fish. The views are very good and the boating is very safe. There are locks and small climbing frames for lifeguards to climb in the water and fix the locks in a case of emergency. People can also, walk, cycle and run along the path beside the canal and there are bridges to view the canal and to cross it in a couple of different areas. Railway: There is a train for children which goes round the park. It is a good experience for children and visits all the main places of the park. The railway is safe as it surrounds the park and so is isolated from the midst where there are many facilities. The line also has gates to allow people to pass and is not very fast.
Bowls green: The Bowls green is quite small but is of good quality. The grass is very smooth and cut finely and there is a hut where players can get ready or wait. The Bowls green is located behind the tennis courts and is beside the two cricket pitches. There are however no signs leading to it or a path. Cycling routes: There are cycling routes which go through the park and around the park. The cycling areas can be easily identified by the cycle sign on paths. There are signs around the park where cycling is not permitted. However there are no off-road paths for people.
FACILITIES OF THE PARK • The park has 10 main facilities. • Out of the 10 facilities, 4 of them are regularly considered or used by young people. • Tennis and basketball courts • Football pitches • Cricket pitches • Cycling routes • Café Cha Cha Cha (which is used by everyone) • There is not many facilities that can be used by young people for a park which is huge. • Compared to all the other facilities; • There are 4 facilities for toddlers • There are 2 facilities for old people
FIELDWORK PLAN • We assessed 3 different locations. • Park main entrance • Football pitches and cricket square • Paddling pools • We looked at 5 different factors in each area. • How people friendly • Litter • Facilities available for youth • How good facilities the are • The location of facilities • We used a scale from 1 to 5. • We did a park survey.

SURVEY • We did a park survey • The survey was split into 4 categories • How often do you use the park • Introduction of new facilities • Does Cassiobury park meet the needs of different people • Facilities of the park • We used a small sample of 20 people • The sample was mainly of adults
WHAT DOES THE DATA SUGGEST • The data does relate to the purpose of enquiry. • The facility analysis shows us; • How many facilities there are • The quality of facilities • The fieldwork plan shows us; • How many facilities for young people are located in the 3 main areas • How accessible the facilities are in each area • The quality of the area and facilities • The survey shows us; • The views of adults on the introduction of new projects for young people • The views of adults on the current park facilities
The graphs do show evidence of stereotyping • More adults (5) would disagree to the introduction of a big project like a skate park • Most adults (5) think that crime would increase if a new project is to be introduced • Most adults (7) think that there are not enough activities for young people. • Only 6 adults think the park meets the needs of young people. • Most adults think that the park meets the needs of toddlers • The data does agree with the question • The data tells us information; • About the number of facilities available • About the quality of facilities available • About the view of people on the facilities available • About the 3 main facility areas.
Solutions Proposed • Designated football square; • Fenced so doesn’t disrupt football pitches and cars • Can be a bit noisy • Easily accessible • Can disrupt walking paths beside • Skate park: • Isolated from main facility areas • Doesn’t cause noise disruption to main facility area • Near the entrance, easily accessible Mainentrance Key: P : parking - - - - - : walking, cycling and running routes Dog free zone where the football and cricket pitches are
CONCLUSION • Cassiobury park doesn’t meet the needs of young people • There are not enough facilities for young people • There are only 4 facilities for young people • Facilities can be improved and new ones can be introduced • Facilities aren’t good enough • Grass tennis courts don’t have good markings or ball don’t bounce • There cycling free areas • Football goals don’t have any nets • Facilities are isolated like the football pitches • Litter pickers don’t go there often • It is harder to get there • It is far away from more popular areas or the entrance • Evidence is that such areas aren’t popular (not many people were there during fieldwork and generally)
However it is difficult to improve the park for young people • There are many bushes and trees • Hard to build around • Facilities that are new built won’t be very accessible • There are many walking trials around the edge • Facilities may take away space for the trails • Facilities may be noisy • Current facilities are very dispersed • Football pitches are spread over a long distance • Space from such facilities has to be taken away for the construction of new facilities
