Vessel particulars “ Eiger-Nordwand” 1st LNG Refit on InlandVessel Built 2000 Overall lenght 177 meter Width 11,45 meter Draft 2,56 meter Tonnage 5300 tonnes Capacity (4 layers) 348 TEU Engines 2x 900 kW Ad Schroot Co-financedby European UnionTrans-European Transport Network (TEN-T)
Considerations • Which engine type? • The size of the tank? • Where do we place the tank? • Cape stone generator? • Start date of the refit? Challenges • Ship built in 2000. • Drawings from 1999. • No digital drawings. • Ventilation, and ventstack position. • No standard procedures availible Ad Schroot Co-financedby European UnionTrans-European Transport Network (TEN-T)

BUNOVA CFD Simulation Goal : Analysis of the explosion safety in case of gas leaks, by investigating the ventilation rate of the LNG tank room. Approach : Only the air flow is calculated, no actual gas leaks are simulated. It is widely accepted that for a semi enclosed space, such as the LNG room of the Eiger, the ventilation is sufficient if the refreshment rate is more than 12 times per hour. So the residence time in each part of the room should be smaller than 3600/12 = 300 seconds. Conclusion: On average every 220 seconds, the engine room is refreshed Ad Schroot Co-financedby European UnionTrans-European Transport Network (TEN-T)
