  2. What is a “SHRIMP”? SensitiveHighResolution IonMicroprobe

  3. Who we are? • Established on Dec.18, 2001 • National centre for application of large scientific instruments • Jointly sponsored and shared by • Ministry of Land and Resources • Ministry of Science and Technology • Chinese Academy of Sciences • Location: Beijing, P. R. of CHINA

  4. What we do? • Major task: • Provide high quality geochronological analysis service • Develop new dating & geochemistry techniques • Precambrian research • Geochronology and tectonic evolution of Central Asian Orogenic Belts • Train postgraduates and PhD. Students, as well as engineers and technicians

  5. Ongoing Research Project • Set up the Internet Virtual Lab and Research Center of Micro-beam Analysis Instruments in China • Ion Microprobe (SHRIMP II, CAMECA1280) • Electron Microprobe (EPMA, SEM) • Laser Microprobe (LA-ICPMS)

  6. Ongoing Research Project • China-South Africa-Germany: Archaean Green stone belts. • China-Mongolia: Geochronology of Ophiolites in Central Asian Orogenic Belts • Parallel studies of Archaean Complexes in Greenland and North China • China-U.S.: Apollo Lunar sample SHRIMP dating • Research and Development of the key parts of TOF-SIMS.

  7. Key Facilities in the Center • SHRIMP II (2 sets): • First SHRIMP II was installed in 2000 • The second one will be installed as soon as the new lab base is built. • SEM: Used for CL and BSE photographing

  8. Electrostatic analyzer Primary ion source Magnet Collector Sample chamber Ion source OperationalUnit

  9. SEM Facility in Beijing SHRIMP Center

  10. Techniques Established: • Zircon U-Th-Pb age dating • Monazite U-Th-Pb age dating • Apatite U-Pb age dating • Opal U-Pb age dating • Zircon in-situ REE analyses Under development: • U age dating of young zircon • U-Th-Pb age dating of fluorite

  11. Operation Principle of the Center • High efficiency Key instrument runs 24 hours per day and 7 days a week. • Open to the world Visitors may analyze samples and obtain the data by themselves.

  12. SHRIMPRemoteOperationSystem (SROS) Jointly developed by: Beijing SHRIMP Center National Institute of Metrology, P.R. China Jilin University

  13. Significance of Sharing SHRIMP with Remote Users • Reasons for sharing SHRIMP by remote operation: • SHRIMP is expensive (€2,600,000) • SHRIMP is rare (Only 9 SHRIMPs are in operation currently) • High demand of machine time (full, full, full!) • Users spread all over the world • Set up methodology for remote sharing of other large scientific instruments.

  14. Functions of SROS • Scientists can observe the samples, operate the SHRIMP and obtain analytical data online in real time. • Support more scientists from different places participating in joint experiments and exchange ideas with each other through video and voice in real time. • Online Access to SHRIMP for students who are far away from the facility.

  18. Feedback from Yichang Workstation User’s Report “In general, SROS is stable and reliable as proved by the 2 days’ remote operation although there are some small problems to resolve. 11 zircon samples in two mounts of G1012 and G1013 for dating were fulfilled in this actual remote analysis and obtained the expected results. All samples analyzed were done by researchers from Yichang Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources at Yichang Workstation...”

  19. University of São Paulo Brazil Sept.16th, 2005

  20. Feedback from USP Workstation The remote operation was a complete success! User’s report: “On 19 and 20 September, the experiment was carried out and 80 U-Pb SHRIMP analyses (20 in standard zircon material, and 60 in unknown zircon grains) were carried out using the automatic protocol in use at the Beijing laboratory… The performance of the software was at top level during the entire duration of the operation. Very seldom was there a necessity for calling the attention of the Chinese staff of the Beijing laboratory to make some small adjustments in situ in order to optimize the conditions of the measurements… The entire operation was considered very successful. It was mentioned that, when a SHRIMP II instrument would be set up at the São Paulo laboratory, the SROS software could be operated locally or remotely, to strengthen the cooperative activities…”

  25. Successful operation of the SROS workstations has proven: • Technology based on the internet for remote control and cooperative sharing of large scientific instruments is feasible. • SHRIMP Remote Operation System has a high practical value.

  26. SROS Analysis Done So Far

  27. Significance of the developing of remote cooperative share operation system for large scientific instruments

  28. Remote share and operation of the Internet virtual Lab for instruments may bring a new way of conducting scientific research.

  29. It provides the technical condition for more scientists to observe analysis process and exchange information at real time in different places. • improve speed and efficiency of scientific and research exchange • realize cooperative research on internet and promote the reform of scientific and research method . • Avoid the debates on the experimental procedure of data obtaining.

  30. Provide condition for solving the problem of the comparability of experimental data • The same scientist can operate more than one scientific instruments and obtain experimental data of the same sample without travel around. It ensures identical experimental method, process and operator’s skill on the same level, so that it has solved the problem of comparability of the data.

  31. Provide new approach for communication between researchers and engineers • Researchers put forward the new requirements for analytical methods and instruments during their study and promote the technical experts innovating the technology of Analysis. • Remote share operation system is a product for sufficient communication between researchers and technical experts and connect the technical and research work more closely as well.

  32. Create technical condition for man-machine separation • Man-machine separationis the trend of development. • Operators and instruments require totally different environment (temperature, humidity and clean degree of air ). They could get what they need and save energy after separated from each other. • Technical development provides possibility of man-machineseparation.

  33. Realizing digitization of analysis process • Remote share operation system will provide the recording function for analytical process so that the details of each step during the analysis could be recurred when needed after the analysis is done, which makes the review and analysis of the occurred problems during analysis easily. • It is very important for the measurements of rare sample.

  34. Finally… Internet has changed the life style for us and the way we work. No doubt, it will bring a totally new way of conducting scientific research in the future.
