Change & The Mega-Realities • Escalating Population Growth • One billion in 1850 • Two billion by 1930 • Four billion by 1979 • Six billion by 1996 • Seven billion - on October 31, 2011!
Exponential Growth! • It is estimated that there will be 9.3 billion people living on the planet in 2047!
Escalating Population Growth • Every 37 months, the current population of America (apx. 315 million) is added to the planet. • Each day the world population increases by more than 224,500 people (births minus deaths).
Over – Information • All of us are being bombarded, on all sides, by information. • All told, more words are published in one minute than you could comfortably ingest during the rest of your life… and America leads the world in the volume of data generated and disseminated.
Media Growth • Television now dominates the world. Television often relies on sensationalism to capture over stimulated, distracted viewers. • Like too much food at once, too much information or data (in any form) is not easily ingested, much less digested. With time being the new currency, you can not afford to pay homage to everyone else’s 15 minutes of fame!
Social-Media Growth • MySpace used to be the rage. • Facebook now has over 990 million users! • What other tools do you use?
Proliferation of Paper • Americans today are consuming at least three (3) times as much paper as ten (10) years ago. • Two (2) basic reasons why our society spends so much on paper: • We have the lowest postal rates in the world • We have the broadest distribution of paper generating technology
Overabundance of Choices • Hallmark Cards offer cards for more than one hundred (100) familial relationships. • More than 1250 varieties of shampoo are in the marketplace. • There are more than 2000 skincare products available. • 3000 books published in print & electronically – DAILY!
Exponential Change • Technology Innovation over the Centuries
Exponential Change • Technology Rules! • What technology inventions do you recall most… and what technology today is blowing your mind?
Are You Ready? • Change, Trends, and Churn! What’s Happening?
Change If the rate of change outside the organization is greater than the rate of change within the organization… the end is in sight!
Embracing Change • Change equals Opportunity! My, How Time Flies? How have the economic challenges and changes provided us with opportunities?
Challenge = Opportunity • New Business start-ups • Homepreneurs / Solopreneurs • Franchising is Up • Doing something we love • Availability of high quality talent • Reasonably priced office space • Sustainable planet initiatives • Work / Life Balance
Embracing Change • When Things Change… We Must Change! In What Ways?
Embracing Change • There is Always a Way to Utilize Change to Our Advantage! The Chickens Have Come Home to Roost!
Embracing Change • Enjoy the Journey! “You are Now Free to Move About the Country!”
Embracing Change • There is a Lesson to be Learned from Every Change! Class is Now in Session!
Embracing Change • People Who Embrace Change Want to be an Integral Part of the Process! Say What?
Barriers to Change • They believe the change process is being handled improperly. • They believe there isn’t any need for the change. • They believe the change will make it harder for them to meet their needs. • They believe the costs outweigh the benefits.
Barriers to Change • They believe the change will fail. • They lack the ability to make the change. • They believe the change is inconsistent with their values. • They believe those responsible for the change can’t be trusted!
Change Requires Choices • I choose to accept this change with high energy and enthusiasm • I choose to take action to support this change • I choose to be effective in motivating others in support of this change • I choose to embrace all the new opportunities that the change will bring
Choices • I choose to be open to other people’s point of view • I choose to creatively approach challenges and adversity • I choose to become an effective change agent
Embracing Change Innovate or Fade Away! - Roger Milliken
Embracing Change • Change… and Productivity • Accept Uncertainty • Look Forward to the Future!
Seize the Future! • It is important to hold onto dreams and think about where we are today. • Are we working toward our goals? • Are we doing what we really enjoy? • Are we living the life we really want to live? • If not… WHAT IS STOPPING US?
Seize the Future! • The future belongs to the risk-takers! Move boldly toward the future!
Risky Business! • Risk-Taking is not just for Leaders! • Risk-Taking requires Support! • Risk-Taking must be embedded in the Corporate Culture! • Risk-Taking means that Mistakes will be Made!
Emerson Very Good Quotes! “Do the thing… and you’ll have the power!” “Nothing great was ever created without enthusiasm!”
