  1. Backing Up Your DVDs

Software You Need • MakeMKV • Will create a decrypted, single-container, exact copy of your movie - extension is .mkv • Will not decrypt every DVD – for these you can buy DVDCloner or OpenRipper • Handbrake • Will convert the now decrypted .mkv or other files/folders to .mp4 or .m4v • Only needed to reduce the size of the movie to free up disk space

  3. MakeMKV setup Set to the location where you want to save the .mkv files 3600s = 1 hour minimum time, but set to what you want to reduce # of titles that appear

Backing Up a DVD First expand all titles and have only 1 audio box checked. ~~ Unless it is supposed to have subtitles, ensure the box is unchecked ~~ Sometimes there are multiple titles or angles especially for special edition copies. Check for the correct length (next slide) and copy that one. If unsure, leave multiple titles checked. The other versions will sometimes fail.

  14. Handbrake Converting • Open Handbrake after MakeMKV completes successfully to reduce the file size Click Source, then Video File Make sure the correct Preset is selected

Handbrake Converting This should be the right length This should be fine as is, but make sure the filename is correct Make sure there are no subtitles Make sure Video settings are correct Source dimensions (regular dvd should be 720x480) Final dimensions (widescreen will be wider than 720 and shorter than 480)
