  1. The Lord’s Prayer

  2. Deliver us from Evil

  3. By saying “Deliver us…” • We’re saying we know we can’t fight evil alone --- we need God to help us. • That’s why Luther uses the word “rescue” in his explanation:

  4. What does this mean? (Luther) • We pray that our Father in heaven would rescue us evil, • and finally at the end of our life, take us from this valley of sorrows to himself in heaven.

  5. By saying “Deliver us…” • We also mean: • we DO WANT to fight evil. • How would you fight evil? • Discuss before continuing

  6. God promises to fight off satan: • Resist the devil and he will flee from you. • (James 4:7) • The next verse shows how to resist:

  7. God gives you armor and a sword: • Paul writes in Ephesians 5: • Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, • Stand firm then, with the … • (Then Paul lists 6 parts of your armor …)Can you think of any before continuing?

  8. 1 • belt of truth buckled around your waist • Jesus said, “The truth will set you free.” • On the other hand, believing Satan’s lies will make us into his slaves.

  9. 2 • with the breastplate of righteousness in place • Satan, the accuser, keeps reminding us of the stuff we are ashamed of, but God frees us from Satan’s grip by His promise: “We have been made righteous in God’s sight by faith, so we have peace with God.” (from Romans 5:1)

  10. 3 • and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the good news of peace. • As we walk around through life (the feet), we avoid playing into Satan’s hands by turning conflicts into peaceful solutions.

  11. 4 • In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. • This is the victory that overcomes the world: our FAITH. (1 John 5:3)

  12. 5 • Take the helmet of salvation • The helmet protects your head (your thought life): See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophies and trickery, based on human traditions. (Colossians 2:8)

  13. 6 • and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. • This is your offensive weapon. • Just like Jesus when he was tempted, said “Get away from me Satan, because God’s Word says (then Jesus added a quote.)

  14. On the one hand, • Doing wrong gives Satan a foothold (according to Ephesians 4:27) • One small lie leads to other lies to cover it up.

  15. But … • Doing good foils the plans of Satan. • Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:21)

  16. And now the end of the Lord’s prayer:

  17. The Conclusion • For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. • These words were added by the early Christians. • Amen means “yes, it shall be so.”
