  1. Lesson 3: Christianity Has a Better Apostle: Jesus Christ (1:1-2:18)--Part 2 • LESSON 2 (Review) • Overview (1:1-3): This spokesman is son/heir, creator, deity, savior, and ruler. • Son/heir • Deity • Creator • LESSON 3 • Ruler WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER. • Savior

  2. Jesus Christ is Ruler (1:13-14; 1:3) (Heb 1:13 NKJV) But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”? (Heb 1:3 NKJV) …when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, • Psalm 110:1 is often applied to Jesus. (Matt. 22:42-46, Acts 2:32-36, I Cor. 15:24-28) • When did Jesus assume power? (Acts 2:32-36) • When will His reign cease? (I Cor. 15:24-28)

  3. Jesus Christ is Ruler (1:13-14; 1:3) (Psa 110:1 NKJV) The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool." • (Mat 22:42 NKJV) saying, "What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?" They said to Him, "The Son of David." • (Mat 22:43 NKJV) He said to them, "How then does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying: • (Mat 22:44 NKJV) 'The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool"'? • (Mat 22:45 NKJV) "If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his Son?" • (Mat 22:46 NKJV) And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.

  4. Jesus Christ is Ruler (1:13-14; 1:3) • (Acts 2:32 NKJV) "This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. • (Acts 2:33 NKJV) "Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. • (Acts 2:34 NKJV) "For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: 'The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, • (Acts 2:35 NKJV) Till I make Your enemies Your footstool."' • (Acts 2:36 NKJV) "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."

  5. Jesus Christ is Ruler (1:13-14; 1:3) • (1 Cor 15:24 NKJV) Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. • (1 Cor 15:25 NKJV) For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. • (1 Cor 15:26 NKJV) The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. • (1 Cor 15:27 NKJV) For "He has put all things under His feet." But when He says "all things are put under Him," it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. • (1 Cor 15:28 NKJV) Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.

  6. Jesus Christ is Ruler (1:13-14; 1:3)--Cont’d (Heb 1:13 NKJV) But to which of the angels has He ever said: "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool"? (Heb 1:14 NKJV) Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation? • (Heb 1:14 NASB) Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation? • Do angels minister “to” or “for” us? • What are angels?

  7. WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER.(2:1-4) (Heb 2:1) Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. (Heb 2:2) For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, (Heb 2:3) how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, (Heb 2:4) God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

  8. WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER.(2:1-4)--Cont’d (Heb 2:1) Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. (Heb 2:1 KJV) Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. • What special danger is in that word “drift”/“slip”? • How many ways can a Christian drift? • Are we like the recipients of this book? Could this happen to us? • What can we do to help prevent it? (Heb. 2:1, Heb. 10:25; see Heb. 10:23-13:25 for Admonitions)

  9. WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER.(2:1-4)-Cont’d Danger Signals of Drifting (How do you know the relationship is in trouble?) • Communications break down. • You don’t talk. • You don’t listen. • You don’t spend time together. • You don’t enjoy doing things together. • You become more critical. • You just don’t care (have compassion).

  10. WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER.(2:1-4)--Cont’d Danger Signals of Drifting • Communications break down. • You don’t talk. What is your attitude toward prayer? • You don’t listen. How do you feel about reading the Bible? • You don’t spend time together. Do you want to worship? • You don’t enjoy doing things together. Are you doing the Lord’s work? • You become more critical. What is your attitude toward God? • You just don’t care (have compassion). Do you care about God’s children? Do you seek and save the lost?

  11. WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER.(2:1-4)--Cont’d Doctrinal Drift • You can drift... • From holding on to (preserving) the doctrine? • From holding forth (preaching) the doctrine? • From hold to (practicing) the doctrine?

  12. WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER.(2:1-4)--Cont’d (Heb 2:2) For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, (Heb 2:3) how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, (Heb 2:4 NASB) God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will. • Why do Christians have a greater obligation than those under the Law of Moses to keep the law God gave them? • What do verses 3-4 indicate about the author?

  13. WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER.(2:1-4)--Cont’d (Heb 2:3) how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heardHim, (Heb 2:4) God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will? • How was God’s message revealed? (I Cor. 2:9-13) • To whom was the message revealed? (Eph. 3:5) • How was the message confirmed? (Mark 16:15-18)

  14. WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER.(2:1-4)--Cont’d • How was God’s message revealed? (I Cor. 2:9-13) • Paul describes the exact mechanism by which God gave His messages to man: words. • (1 Cor 2:12 NKJV) …that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. • (1 Cor 2:13 NKJV) These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches…. • Observe: • They (the prophets) were taught things by the Holy Spirit. • They were taught those things in words--words that they could then speak.

  15. WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER.(2:1-4)--Cont’d • To whom was the message revealed? (Eph. 3:5) • The Holy Spirit communicated with prophets. • Paul wrote to the Ephesians about his... • (Eph 3:4-5 NKJV) …knowledge in the mystery of Christ), which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealedby the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: • New information had been revealed to prophets (including Apostles) by the Spirit. • Prophets were part of the miraculous age (I Cor. 12:28-29, 14:29-32; Eph. 4:11-15).

  16. WARNING: DON’T DRIFT; HEED THE WORD FROM THE BETTER MESSENGER.(2:1-4)--Cont’d • How was the message confirmed? (Mark 16:15-18) • Signs, wonders, and miracles confirmed prophetic messengers and their messages. • (Mark 16:20 NKJV) And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirm-ing the word through the accompanyingsigns. Amen. • (Heb 2:4 NKJV) God also bearingwitness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will? • The Holy Spirit provided confirmation/witness using events that could be perceived through the five senses.

  17. Jesus Christ is Savior (2:5-18; 1:3) • (Heb 2:6 NKJV) But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him? (Heb 2:7 NKJV) You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands. (Heb 2:8 NKJV) You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. • Who is “man” (“[a] son of man”) that does not now have all in subjection to him? • Over what did man lose his power? • How will man gain power over that thing again?

  18. Jesus Christ is Savior (2:5-18; 1:3)--Cont’d • (Heb 2:9 NKJV) ... Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death …that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. • (Heb 2:17 NKJV) Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. • Why did Jesus have to take an earthly form to be our savior? • (2:9) • (2:10) • (2:14-15) • (2:17) • (2:18)
