Digital Libraries in the Classroom Using the Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) to Support Learning Kathryn Ginger & Mary Marlino UCAR/ The DLESE Program Center (DPC) ginger@ucar.edu 2002 American Meteorological Society Presentation
A True Story from 1998: • 5th grade teacher struggles to answer her students questions about El-Niño • She is not sure where to look for materials or how to judge the quality of the materials she finds • She contacts me for online references The DLESE Program Center
Her Requirements Included: • Trusted source of scientific accuracy • Shows El-Niño in action but is understandable • Increases her knowledge of El-Niño • Has an appropriate 5th grade activity The DLESE Program Center
Titles of the URLS Provided: • Scientific accuracy: sites from NOAA, NASA and the EPA • El-Niño in action: Idealized ENSO Simulation • Increase knowledge:What is El-Niño • 5th grade activity: Coastal Areas: What is El-Niño The DLESE Program Center
Teacher’sResponse: • “Wonderful, this is great” • But …. • “Isn’t there someplace I could go and get this same information [list of URLs]?” The DLESE Program Center
My Response in 1998: • No, not really • You could try the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse or browse some NOAA sites • Wait for AMS Education to finish creating ENSO-lyzer The DLESE Program Center
My Response in 2002: Is different The DLESE Program Center

DLESE is: • An information system to: • Discover on-line educational resources about the Earth • Locate and visualize datasets (future) • Identify trusted and reviewed resources • A virtual community center for: • Collaborative networking • News • Opportunities The DLESE Program Center
DLESE is: • Community of people: designing & building the library in a distributed way using participatory design & the user-as-contributor Feedback News Governance User scenarios Services (e.g. EET) Diversity Data Tools Resources K-gray The DLESE Program Center
The DLESE Difference: • Use of metadata for enhanced educational description and discovery • Combination of metadata and resource content searching • Visualizing data (future development) • Access to other collections like NASA and Alexandria Digital Earth Prototype The DLESE Program Center

How Has DLESE Been Used: • Provided “classic” Earth graphics for the classroom • Discussion forums to design curriculum and visualizations • Increased resource comprehension by teachers • Helped resource creators document and manage their own collections The DLESE Program Center
Conclusions • Digital libraries can be useful tools in the classroom from searching for resources to visualizing data • DLESE as a geoscience digital library can become a first-choice, one-stop resource • www.dlese.org The DLESE Program Center
