What is a SAN? Well, technically…. • Storage Area Network • (SAN) is a high-speed subnetwork of shared Storage devices. • A storage device is a machine that contains nothing but a disk or disks for storing data.
What makes a SAN Better than what I have? • Chances are you are still running local servers with local storage. Here are some questions that might make you a little bit more open to the idea of a SAN. • How much of your current disk (per server) is empty space? • A SAN will maximize your disk usage on a per host basis. • A SAN can dynamically expand the size of a LUN to a defined parameter (Disk Provisioning) • How many channels or paths are available to your data? • Fault Tolerant storage is built in to provide multiple paths to your data in the event you lose a server. • Are you servers highly available? • With a SAN, you gain the ability to cluster servers for added redundancy and tolerance.
Who makes a good SAN these days? VENDOR OPTIONS
Dell SAN MD3000i • The first SAN we will entail is the Dell MD3000i • The PowerVault MD3000i networked storage array leverages the modularity and availability of the PowerVault series to deliver an IP network storage solution that can consolidate up to 16 hosts. By extending the connectivity capability of today’s MD3000 controller architecture, Dell is able to bring to market a low cost, easy to use, expandable, and highly available iSCSI SAN storage array.
Dell SAN MD3000i There are two configurations possible with this particular SAN.
HP MSA2000i • Start small and grow in number of supported servers and total capacity Support for 512 LUNs with sizes up to 16 TB: • The MSA2000i G2 with 512 LUNs has more than sufficient LUNs for storage configuration flexibility. Increased level of data protection: • All models support the optional HP StorageWorks MSA2000 Snapshot Software which offers controller-based Snapshot and cloning functionality for increased data protection. Controller-based snaps produce space-efficient, copy-on-write Snapshots and clones. High availability for business continuity: • Reduce risk of IT failure with active/active controllers, dual-ported drives, and redundant hardware components. Improve productivity and prevent data loss: • RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, 10, 50. Redundant hardware with automatic failover resulting in less downtime.
What is right for your business? • Some Key Questions: • Are you looking to incorporate Virtualization in with this SAN? • 2. Are you looking for redundancy with this SAN? • 3. How many servers do you plan to attach to this SAN? • 4. What types of servers are you planning on using in the SAN? (i.e. SQL, Exchange, SharePoint) • 5. Are you looking for something that can scale with your business?
