Research Development: A Leadership Challenge • Research Administration has traditionally been a “downstream” function • Competition is increasing; more schools look to research as a major strategic focus • More effort is needed “upstream” (more faculty writing more and better proposals) • Research Administrators as coaches, mentors, facilitators GOAL: To GROW the research enterprise!

NORDP • Formed in 2010 • Now has ~500 members • Sponsors robust annual conference • ListServe is valuable clearinghouse for best practices
Proposal Development Team Structure • Schedules PDT assignments • Prepares proposal development plans • Convenes and chairs meetings with PIs Team Leader (Project Manager) • Identifies Funding Opportunities • Sends targeted announcements to faculty • Maintains database of faculty expertise Information Specialist Training & Development • Conducts grant writing workshops • Manages limited submission reviews • Directs grant writing “boot camp” • Reviews proposal requirements • Edits draft materials from PIs • Provides “boiler plate” information Editor 1 (Scientific/Technical) • Reviews proposal requirements • Edits draft materials from PIs • Provides “boiler plate” information Editor 2 (Humanities/Soc Sci) • Designs visual illustrations for proposals • Assists PIs with poster designs • Prepares graphics for research office reports Graphics Specialist
Success Rate with NSF CAREER Proposals 2010 - 2012 • Overall UTK CAREER record: 40 proposals, 12 funded, 1 pending • Success rate: 12/39 = 31% • CAREER workshop attendees: 76 attended, 18 proposals, 8 funded • Success rate: 8/18 = 44% • UTK faculty NOT attending workshops: 22 proposals, 4 funded, 1 pending • Success rate: 4/21 = 19%
