SHOULD I EAT FOR TWO DURING PREGNANCY? If you’re pregnant you will become familiar with the phrase “Eat for two during Pregnancy”. In fact, this is one of the advice that you might get very often while you are pregnant. So we decided to take up the question. Do women really need to eat for two in Pregnancy? Well, this idea is not true. Eating for two is just a myth. Yes, your nutrient needs are much higher during pregnancy but your total energy requirements only increase slightly. Your daily energy requirement depends on your height, weight, age, lifestyle. On average the requirement is around 2000 calories a day in non-pregnant state and when you are pregnant during the first trimester i.e. in the initial three months of pregnancy you do not require any extra energy or any extra calories.
As you move further to the second trimester of pregnancy, energy requirements increase by approximately 330 calories in a day. Further on, during the third trimester i.e in the last three months of your pregnancy, you require an extra 450 calories per day. So you must be able to observe that the energy requirements are only slightly increased during pregnancy, the requirement is not doubled.
Further on if you talk about nutrients. Yes, there is an increased need in many important nutrients during pregnancy like protein, folic acid, calcium, iron, iodine, etc. Eating nutritious food will help you support your pregnancy and the new changes in your body. For healthy eating during pregnancy know how much to eat, what foods are healthy, find a balance between getting enough nutrients for your baby’s growth while keeping a healthy weight for you and your baby’s health. Now you might have a query about what will happen if I follow the myth and eat for two i.e double my diet. Eating too much while pregnant can lead to excessive weight gain and an increased risk of pregnancy complications. It can be detrimental for both mother and the baby. Women who are overweight during pregnancy are at increased risk of having a miscarriage and developing conditions such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, preeclampsia. They are also more likely to have a premature baby. The possible need for caesarean delivery is also increased. There is an increased risk of haemorrhage after birth and blood clot-related problems.
If you put on too much weight, the baby may also grow big in size or become macrosomic. This can lead to additional problems like difficult delivery, increased need for caesarean delivery, etc. This can affect the baby in the long run too. These babies are at an increased risk of conditions like childhood obesity, diabetes, further on in their lives.
Additionally, it becomes more difficult for an overweight mother to return to her pre-pregnancy weight. So, considering all these associated problems, you should know how to meet the high nutrient demands of pregnancy without eating excessively and thus without gaining weight out of the permissible limits. For this, you should eat basically a healthy, nutritious, high-quality, balanced food rather than doubling your food quantity. To ensure all this we take care of your diet during pregnancy by proving personalized diet-chart. We hope you will find this information useful in optimizing your pregnancy diet. Wishes for a happy eating and healthy and safe pregnancy!
