CRS’ Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICT4D) Webinar Moving towards mainstreaming the use of ICT Solutions to improve CRS Programming Efforts Carrie Miller & Dina Brick mHealth Interagency Working Group April 6, 2010
Why is CRS mainstreaming ICT4D solutions? • Improve the quality of the services we provide • Improve our ability to scale to serve more people • Help people to use information to manage better • Leverage experience from one project to the next more effectively
Objectives • Increase participants’ knowledge and understanding of the innovative ICT4D solutions being provided by a number of private and not-for-profit organizations across a broad range of sectors. • Increase participants’ awareness and understanding of partnerships supporting and promoting ICT4D.
Preparation: Pre-Recording • Purpose: Improve presentation quality & time management • Software: Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro • Equipment needed: Good internet connection & headset with a working microphone • Tip: When recording in Adobe close all windows except the presentation window • Tip: Do not record over a wireless connection
Implementation: Technology • Software: Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro • Equipment needed: Reliable internet connection, headset & keyboard • Tip: Use chat feature - reduces bandwidth demand • Tip: Overseas connections experience a 1-2 minute delay; periodic pauses are necessary
Implementation: Human Resources • Technician: Highly proficient user to manage the meeting room • IT support: Monitor connection & troubleshoot participant technical problems • Facilitators (2 or 3): Facilitate the session; avoid dead air • Tip: It can be helpful to have “extras” available to ask questions, track down presenters • Tip: LINGOs organizers a training on how to conduct online meetings
Implementation: Facilitation • Facilitation team: Needs to have access to an excellent internet connection • Facilitating Q&A: use of chat feature facilitates question tracking & reduces risk of audio problems • Tip: Schedule regular breaks • Tip: Continue to remind users to use the chat feature • Tip: Prepare a checklist/guidelines for presenters: time of presentation, facilitator’s role, using the ‘talk feature’
Webinar: Results & Evaluation • Total participants: 172 • Evaluation: Overall very satisfied; Mixed reviews on Q&A preferred more interaction • Post webinar communication: Request sent to single individual • Tip: Create an external website to house webinar information & presentations ahead of time • Tip: Automate registration system to allow for participant tracking (pros & cons)
