  2. Immunity • Antigen – anything foreign in the body. • Examples are bacteria and microbes • Antibodies – immune system response to antigen

  3. Immunity • Primary barrier to infection is the skin. • Microbes still get in and can cause • Direct damage to body tissue and blood • Indirect damage by producing toxins

Immunity • Natural Immunity – from mothers milk or blood. • Acquired Immunity – developed in life. • Active: a person is exposed to an antigen and the body produces antibodies to fight it. • Passive: a person is given blood which contains the antibodies. The body can not produce new antibodies so effects are short term.

  6. Immunity • Vaccination – weak or dead antigen that allows body to develop antibodies. • First developed by Edward Jenner (cow pox)
