Unit 1 Lesson 6
Do Now Add the following: • 2/3 + 1/6 = 4/6 + 1/6 = 5/6 • ¾ - ½ = 3/ 4 - 2/4 = 1/4 3. 1/x + 1/y = 1y/xy + 1x/xy = y + x/xy
Quiz/Review Simplify: 2. Draw the graph and express as an inequality • (-2, 6] 4. (-3, 7] U (3, 10]
Objectives and HW • Be able to convert from scientific notation to decimal form • Be able to convert from decimal form to scientific notation • Be able to calculate using scientific notation HW: Lesson 6
Scientific Notation • 1 ≤ a ˂ 10; x = a X 10^n • Positive exponent bigger number Negative exponent smaller number 3. Decimal moves to the right number gets bigger Decimal moves to the left number gets smaller
Convert from scientific notation to decimal form: Ex. 1 4.5 X 10^3 Positive exp.; number will be biggermove decimal to the right 3 spaces Ans: 4500 Ex. 2 5.6 X 10^-4 Neg. exp.; number will be smallermove decimal to the left 4 places Ans: .00056
Convert from decimal form to scientific notation Ex. 1 23000 Number will be smaller; exp. will be positivemove decimal to the left 4 places Ans: 2.3 x10^4 Ex. 2 .0067 Number will be bigger; exp. will be neg move decimal 3 places to the right Ans: 6.7 X 10^ -3
Calculating w/ Scientific Notation • Same bases, subtract exponents 2. Divide the number part of scientific notation Ex. (3.1 X 10^7)/(1.2 X 10^-3) Exponents: 7 - -3 = 7 + 3 = 10 Divide numbers: 3.1 / 1.2 = 2.6 Ans: 2.6 X 10^10
