A Hydrogen-inclusive Future • Who is working on H2 and FCs? • US, Canada, EU, Japan, IPHE, IEA-HIA • And what about the developing world? The International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies is a UNIDO project with the mission of demonstrating viable implementations of hydrogen energy technologies and facilitating their widespread use in developing countries. • Over 70% of increase in world primary energy demand between 2004-2030 comes from developing countries. • By 2030, China and India account for 57% of world coal demand, up from 43% in 2004.
UNIDO-ICHET Mission The International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies is a UNIDO project with the mission of demonstrating viable implementations of hydrogen energy technologies and facilitating their widespread use in developing countries.
UNIDO-ICHET Background • UNIDO-ICHET is located in Istanbul, Turkey • Formed in 2003 – trust fund agreement between • UNIDO and Turkish Government (Ministry of • Energy and Natural Resources) • Started operation in 2004 • Budget $40M over 5 years • Currently, staff of about 25

ICHET Support to International Projects • Feasibility Studies • Support up to 10 studies / year at US$ 10,000 per study, 100% funding • An additional US$ 15,000 is available from BSEC • Application form available to download at web site • Inform applicants of evaluators comments • Allows expert / consortia to apply • Evaluations every 3 months • Pilot Projects • Support 1-2 selected projects per year in developing countries with an ICHET support of up to 500,000 of US$, 50% funding

Demonstration Projects • H2 3-wheelers in India • Official commitment to support H2 Tri-Wheeler Project in India in collaborationwithIIT Delhi • 15 vehicles will be converted to run on H2 in the city of Agra, taking visitors from the rail station to the Taj Mahal • 4 partners involved, IIT Delhi, Mahindra & Mahindra, UNIDO-India, ICHET . Possibly Air Products. • Total budget 1 M US$, ICHET support of 0.5 M US$ in the form of funds to experts and equipment
Demonstration Projects • Bozcaada H2 island
Bozcaada ( Bozca Island ) – Some Facts • Bozca Island, ‘Bozcaada” in Turkish, is an island located in the west of • Dardanelles and the city of Canakkale in the Aegean Sea. • It has one of the highest wind energy potentials throughout Turkey. • The average wind speed throughout the year is 7.0 m/s. • The wind speed is more than 17.1 m/s for 34.5 days and is between • 10.8 and 17.1 m/s 86.2 days. • There is an existing wind farm of 10.2 MW capacity which serves the • need of the mainland • Population of the island increases from 2500-3000 residents to 10000 • during summer months • The island is a very well-known tourist resort in Turkey Due to its high wind energy capacity, Bozcaada is one of the most preferred locations to take advantage of renewable energies in Turkey and is thus also an ideal showcase for Hydrogen energy technologies

Bozcaada Hydrogen System Components • The system components for Bozca Island Project are; • 10 kW PV Panels on the roof of the Governor’s building • 10-20 kW Wind Turbine at an adjacent hill • Reverse Osmosis System • 20-40 kW Electrolyzer • Compressor • Conventional H2 Storage Tanks • Hydrogen Filling System • Hydrogen Cylinders • 5 kW FC-based UPS System at a local hospital • FC-driven Golf-Cart • FC-driven Boat
Demonstration Projects • Sedef island stand-alone H2-system • Sedef Island; • located at the southeast of Istanbul which has 32.9 hectares of land • The highest point on the island was measured as 55 m • The residents founded the ‘Sedef Island Protection Society’ • Project objectives: • to meet the electricity demand of 2 workers house through RES (windturbine+ • PV panels) • to produce H2 from RES and use it in the H2-UPS system and H2 cookers in the houses

Research Projects • Bio-Electro Hydrogen Production from Biomass • Project objectives: • Hydrogenproduction with a bio-reactor coupled to an electrolyser • Project benefits: • pure Hydrogen will be produced directly from the main process • Hydrogen will be produced at a lower cost compared to H2O electrolysis • the side product of this process from the bioreactor will be an oxidized • organic mass which can be utilized in many different ways • Project deliverables: • design of the Bio-Electro combined system at demonstration level • optimization of the process parameters at demonstration level • economical analysis of the process at industrial level Project partners: Çukurova University, Edinburgh University, ICHET, Ege University, Koç University
Education and Training • Short Courses • Project objectives: • to organize short courses on H2 & fuel cell technologies • to provide hands-on training opportunities in the lab • Project benefits: • individuals from developing countries will receive • practical training • technology, safety & future energy aspects will be • understood by participants • Project deliverables: • quarterly short courses • international summer school on PEMFC jointly with JRC, • in July 2008 • 40 international students from Italy, Iran, S.Africa, • Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia & Turkey • First time, a two-day short course covering H2 & fuelcellsbasics wascompleted • 35 attendants from universities, companies • laboratory sessions • Repeated quarterly with international participation

International Collaborations • ICHET has been accepted to become a Full Member of the EU-New European Researchers Grouping on Fuel Cells and Hydrogen of Joint Undertaking ( JU ) ( 12,000 Euro/yr ) • ICHET is a candidate for membership in the ExCo of the Hydrogen Implementing Agreement ( HIA ) and is already participating in meetings of Tasks 18 & 24 as an invited observer ( 10,000 $/yr )
