    1. 2009 ACTI CONFERENCE PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT (PLA) PRESENTED BY DR. DURANDA GREENE BERMUDA COLLEGE

    2. What is PLA? A process in which individuals have the opportunity to obtain credit for college-level knowledge and skills gained outside of the classroom and/or through other educational programmes. A process which compares an individuals prior learning gained from prior education, work/life experiences and personal study to the learning outcomes in college courses.

    3. WHAT IS PLA (contd) College credit is not awarded for experience but for the learning gained from work and life experiences. Experience by itself is not necessarily evidence of learning.

    4. BASIC ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT PLA Significant learning takes place outside of the classroom. This learning can and should be evaluated and recognized by education. Education, training and other practices which force individuals to repeat learning they have already mastered are inefficient, costly and unnecessary.

    5. Benefits of pla TO THE LEARNER/STUDENT Encourages students to pursue education. Eliminates duplication of learning. Increases access. May reduce the time and cost of a college education. Validates learning gained through work and life experience. Increases self-esteem and self-confidence.

    6. BENEFITS TO THE INSTITUTION May increase student recruitment and retention. Increases accessibility to a broad range of learners. Allows for more appropriate learner placement in programmes. Demonstrates that the college is flexible and acknowledges life long learning.

    7. PLA METHODS Challenge Exams CLEPCollege-level Examination Program DANTESDefense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support Portfolio Assessment

    8. CHALLENGE EXAMINATIONS A method of assessment developed and evaluated by the course faculty to measure an individuals prior learning as it relates to the learning outcomes of a particular course. Most popular method used at Bermuda College. Students make application within their first semester.

    9. Challenge exams (contd) Challenge may be written, oral, laboratory or practical examination, essays or any combination thereof. Course can be challenged only one. A grade of at least C must be obtained to earn credit; but, no grade is recorded in the academic record. CR notation on transcript which does not affect GPA.

    10. College-level examination program (clep) Provides student with the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in undergraduate college courses. Used less frequently by Bermuda College students. Any CLEP exam can be taken at BC and transcripts sent to the college of the students choice. www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html

    11. DEFENSE ACTIVITY FOR NON-TRADITIONAL EDUCATION SUPPORT (dantes) EXAMS Originally created for military personnel but are now open to the general public. Least used method at Bermuda College. Free individual study guides for each exam available on website. www.getcollegecredit.com

    12. PORTFOLIO Bermuda College no longer offers this option but it will be available for trades certification through the National Training Board. A portfolio is a detailed document developed by the learner which articulates the learning acquired through work and life experience which may be equivalent to the learning outcomes in a college course.

    13. PORTFOLIO (CONTD) The portfolio describes the learning achieved from prior experience, articulates the learning toward specific course requirements, and verifies the learning through documentation. A portfolio normally includes: Resume and College Transcript Prior Learning Experience Essay: Describes how the the content of the course which one is challenging is a part of his/her experience.

    14. PORTFOLIO (CONTD) Narrative: Translation of experience into competencies. Using academic language, or the language in the course syllabus, the individual lists the course requirements and matches them with his/her experience. Sample of Work: Demonstrates the individuals competencies using job descriptions; work evaluations; document s, articles or papers one has written; newspaper or journal articles about ones work.

    15. PORTFOLIO (CONTD) Relevant professional certificates and diplomas. Relevant, specific letters of verification from employer or other professionals. Video, DVD, Photographs representing other evidence of work not covered by any of the other areas.

    16. ASSESSING THE PORTFOLIO Has the student demonstrated college level knowledge? Has the student demonstrated the depth and breadth of knowledge indicated by the course description? Is the portfolio logically, thoughtfully organized? Does the essay explain how the learning was acquired?

    17. ASSESSING THE PORTFOLIO (contd) Does the portfolio demonstrate an understand-ing of both theory and practice appropriate to the subject? Does the student demonstrate college level writing skills? Has the student addressed each objective and/ or goal in the syllabus? Has the student established the authenticity of the evidence provided?

    18. CHALLENGES Course credits earned by PLA may not be transferable to another institution. Portfolio assessment is a very time consuming process. Persons must be sufficiently trained to assess portfolios. Ensuring a clear understanding of PLA by all stakeholders.
