Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) • Sometimes called ‘rednose’ • Viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. • Herpes virus ( BHV-1) • Virus can invade placenta and fetus via maternal blood, results in abortion or stillbirth 2 to 3 months post-infection (90 days most common). • Causes encephalitis in 2 to 3 month-old calves (can occur in adults). • First seen in the US in Colorado, found on all continents except South America.
Three forms of this disease Ocular IBR IBR (respiratory) IPV (infectious pustular vulvovaginitis) In feedlot cattle the respiratory form is most common. Breeding cattle most common to see IPV or abortion. Ocular form most often seen in calves.
Symptoms of IBR • 104o to 108oF body temperature • Nasal discharge, may contain flecks of blood • Depression, loss of appetite • Increased respiratory rate • Profuse salivation, muzzle becomes encrusted with dried exudate, when peeled off tissue is a brilliant red (“Rednose”)
Symptoms usually last about one week, recovery usually 1 to 4 days after peak temperature. • If bronchopneumonia (pasteurella) complicates then death loss of 15 to 100%. • Animals remain carriers(latent infection) showing no signs, can reactivate periodically due to stress, corticosteriod use, etc.
Prevention of IBR( all forms) • Vaccinate • Use nasal vaccine (more attenuated) in breeding herds, especially in pregnant cows. • In feedlot cattle and young animals use IM vaccine
IPV • Acute infection in cattle, inflamination, necrosis and pustule formation(2mm dia.) on the mucosa of the vulva and vaginia. • Venereal transmission mostly ( AI, PG exams, etc can contribute to spread). • Delays successful breeding of animals, causing long calving season.
Ocular Form of IBR • Causes the eyes to become milky blue colored, caused blindness. Does not produce a scare like pinkeye. • Newborn calves infected in utero during late pregnancy are usually born blind.
