Document Storage Systems • North Palm Beach, FL • Relationship with OMH since 2011 • NewCrop is a third-party e-Prescription software that allows prescribers to electronically submit prescriptions to Surescripts registered pharmacies. • Currently a stand-alone product • Integration into vxVistA is in development
What is NewCrop e-Pharmacy? NewCrop is an industry leading electronic prescribing service that has been deployed in a wide range of EMRs and medical networks since 2003. • NewCroputilizes industry-leading content and capabilities: • Clinical drug content from First Data Bank or Managed care formularies • Electronic transmission of prescriptions via Surescripts • All-doctor drug history from Surescripts • Complete PDR from LexiComp • EPCS module: user interface or data services
What is Surescripts? • Nation’s most comprehensive clinical network • By connecting to the Surescripts network, NYOMH will have the ability to send and receive critical health information in a timely manner, giving patients the care they deserve.
Why Prescribe Electronically • To eliminate the problem of stolen or forged prescriptions • http://www.ag.ny.gov/feature/i-stop • ISTOP • This law requires all prescribers who practice in New York State to only prescribe medications electronically, by no later than March 27, 2015. More detail can be found at • https://www.health.ny.gov/professionals/narcotic/prescription_monitoring/ OR • http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/pharm/pharmelectrans.htm • Are pharmacists/prescribers obligated to transmit prescriptions electronically?Answer: Not yet. However, recently passed legislation known as the I-STOP bill, will require all prescriptions to be transmitted in electronic format, except for emergency situations and other limited circumstances, by no later than March 27, 2015.
What is EPCS? • Electronic Prescription for Controlled Substances • Two-factor authentication using a user supplied password AND: • Passcode via an automated phone call to the prescriber’s direct line • Passcode via a text message sent to the prescriber’s cell phone • Uses Verizon Universal Identify Solutions to provide security and authentication to electronically transmit controlled substances

EPCS Administration • Validate new prescribers to EPCS • Revoke access to prescribers • Assist prescribers with Verizon setup • May delegate setup assistance to other staff members (i.e. IT) • Must have two EPCS Admins • One EPCS Admin must be activated in EPCS (valid DEA number) • This user will validate future EPCS users • The second EPCS admin must validate the first EPCS admin • One-time responsibility
IT Support • Provider general support • Account maintenance • Password reset • Adding/editing users • Assist in EPCS setup with prescribers • Adjust printer margins for prescribers
New Prescribers • When a new prescriber is added to staff the following must happen in this order: • Add the new user into NewCrop • Contact vxsupport@dssinc.com and request the user to be registered with Surescripts • Provide the prescriber name and facility • Once the prescriber is Surescripts registered, complete the EPCS activation • Contact vxsupport@dssinc.com to validate EPCS bio-certificate.
