What does the provisional commodity OD data cover? The provisional commodity OD data: • is a comprehensive multimodal commodity origin destination database for the US • has identical dimensions to the freight database developed under the Freight Analysis Framework II • is released by the end of March each year covering the most recent past year. For example, in March 2007, FHWA released the provisional data for calendar year 2006; and in March 2008, FHWA will release the provisional data for calendar year 2007.
What does the term of “provisional” data mean ? The term of provisional data here means that the dataset is the best that can be organized at the time with the available resources; and the Freight Office has no plans to update this dataset in the future.
Why does FHWA develop the provisional data? • The demand of most current data from Federal, State, local governmental agencies and private organizations as the result of the FAF1 project • The recognition of the need by various TRB committees and demanded by the most recent TRB special conference on Freight Demand Modeling: Tools for Public-Sector Decision Making
How to use the provisional commodity origin destination data? The provisional data has identical format and definitions as the FAF2 commodity database. • All database programs used in FAF2 are applicable • The FAF2 Commodity GIS data linkage is also applicable.
Who Is Involved? Under the leadership of the Office of Freight Management and Operations in FHWA, a team including Battelle Memorial Institute, MacroSys Research and Technology , and University of Tennessee is organized to develop the database.
