What is Childhood Obesity? Obesity is an excess accumulation of fat It’s the result of “caloric imbalance”, more calories are consumed then expended Affected by genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors
Statistics • Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. • In 2008, more than 1/3 of children and adolescents were over weight or obese. • 70% of obese youth has at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. • In 2012 for Florida alone, 26.6% of the population are obese.
Causes of Obesity • Diet; over eating • Lack of exercise • Genetics • Age • Psychological issues • Medications • Medical problems • Hormone disorder • Prenatal environmental factors
Effects of Obesity Immediate Effects: • more likely to have cardiovascular disease. • More likely to have prediabetes • Greater risk for bone and joint problems • Sleep apnea • Social and psychological problems Long-term effects: • Likely be become obese adults • Develop Diabetes • Likely to have a Stroke • Develop osteoarthritis • Have Heart disease • Increased risk of cancer
How to manage your weight • Display healthy eating habits - eat a lower calorie diet - avoid fatty, sugary foods - eat vegetables and fruit daily • Be active - exercise at least 30 minuets, 5 days a week.
Teaching Obesity in the classroom • children learn from what they see, if the teacher displays healthy habits they will to • Provide healthy snacks • Teach about fruits and veggies and what they do for your body • Allow them to be active- emphasize on how good sports are. • Help them experience success and develop a positive self-image.
