The Plan • Introduce the scheme • Explain the role of the County Mentoring Officer • Link to Society membership, training and the advisory service • Answer questions • Discuss ways of strengthening the scheme
The Scheme • Underwritten by Government (National Training Strategy) • Designed to support clerks during their first year in the profession • Organised by the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC) • Part of the SLCC service to clerks whether they are members or not
The Aim ……is to help new clerks settle into the profession and reduce the turnover of clerks……
The Four Pillars • Welcome Pack and “The Essential Clerk” • A mentor • The network of local contacts • Links to training from CTP, SLCC, CALC, University of Gloucestershire
The County Mentoring Officer • 45 branches are covered • CMO undergoes specialist training • Completes written assessment • Gains remuneration and CPD points
The Support Process CMO • receives fortnightly listing of new clerks • makes contact • offers a chat, a meeting, support, listens • maintains contact through the first year • invites new clerk to networking and training events
SLCC Membership Offers in addition • Lower cost training • Advisory service • Branch activities
The Training Initiative • WWYC (Working With Your Council) with support from one-to-one mentors, training groups and the e-group • CiLCA (Certificate in Local Council Administration) 3. CPD programme of specialist topics • University of Gloucestershire advanced qualifications
The Advisory Service Specialist advisors • Legal • Financial • Employment Regional advisors
